I. Tense Shifts in Indirect Speech
Read the quotes about a psychology course. Then rewrite each quote as indirect speech.
Sometimes more than one answer is possible.
1. The professor said, “Psychology 101 includes a unit on motivation.”
The professor said that psychology 101 included a unit on motivation.
2. A student said,” The class is discussing motivation and personality this week.”
A student said that the class was discussing motivation and personality that week.
3. The professor said,” the class is reading about Abraham H. Maslow’s theories on motivation.”

II. Keeping the original tense in Indirect Speech


Read the quotes from a business meeting. Then rewrite the quotes as indirect speech. Use the
same tense as the direct speech. Sometimes more than on answer is possible.
1. “We are trying to improve our new marketing plan.” – the marketing manager
The marketing manager said that they are trying to improve their new marketing plan.
2. “The clients love it.” -the manager
The manager said that the clients love it.
3. “We have always solved these problems in the past.” – Janet
Janet said that they have always solved those problems in the past.
4. “Staff satisfaction has been very important.” – Janet
Janet said that staff satisfaction has been very important.
5. ‘Tomorrow, we are going to have a half-day training session on giving constructive
feedback.” – Rodrigo
Rodrigo said that the following day, they are going to have a half-day training session on
giving constructive feedback.
6. “We will all work together, as a team.” – Rodrigo
Rodrigo said that they will all work together, as a team.

III. Replace said in each sentence with one of the verbs in the box. Then report the
sentences in indirect speech. Choose the verb that best fits the sentence and the
speaker. You may use some verbs more than once.

8. The little boy said, I didn’t eat all the cookies.”

9. After he had told us about our quiz, the instructor said, “The midterm exam is going to be in
two weeks.”

going to be in two weeks.
10. The TV news commentator said,” This station will present a special report on the president’s
speech.”
The TV news commentator announced that this station would present a special report on the
president’s speech.

IV. Complete the statement about each dialog, using wanted to know if/whether or
whether or not.
Example: Mr Nolan: Is the next sales meeting in January?
Secretary: Yes, it is.
Mr. Nolan wanted to know if/whether the next sales meeting was in January.

Secretary: I don’t know

3. Receptionist: Did I get a raise?
Supervisor: I’m afraid not.

Secretary: Yes, I have.

5. Secretary: Has the receptionist been answering the phone correctly?
Supervisor: I think so.
The secretary wanted to know if the receptionist had been answering the phone correctly.
6. Clerk: Do we get two hours for lunch?
Supervisor: No, you get only an hour and a half.
The clerk wanted to know whether they got two hours for lunch or not.
7. Manager: Is the repairman for the photocopier coming today?
Secretary: I think so.
The manager wanted to know if the repairman was coming that day for the photocopier.
8. Clerk: Is the repairman going to fix the photocopiers after lunch?
Secretary: I hope so.
The clerk wanted to know if the repairman was going to fix the photocopier after lunch.

V. Report the questions in indirect speech, using She asked or She wanted to know.

1. What area of linguistics are you planning to study after you finish your English language
courses?
She asked me what area of linguistic I am planning to study after I finish my English
language course.
2. Why has Marcella decided to study the child’s use of language?
She asked her why Marcella had decided to study the child’s use of language.
3. When does a human baby usually speak his or her first word?
She wanted to know when a human baby usually spoke his or her first word.
4. Which word does a baby usually utter first, mama or papa?
She wanted to know which word a baby usually uttered first, mama or papa.
5. How many vocabulary words has a child learned by the time he or she is one year old?
She wanted to know how many vocabulary words a child had learned by the time he or she

VI. Report each command in indirect speech, using tell, order, command, warn, or direct.
Add an appropriate indirect object after each introductory verb.

1. The army captain said,” Don’t shoot until I give the order.”
The army captain ordered us not to shoot until he gave the order.
2. The lifeguard said,” Stop pushing people into the pool.”
The lifeguard warned them to stop pushing people into the pool.
3. Gail’s mother said,” Don’t swim in the deep end of the pool.”

VII. Report each request in Indirect speech.

Example:
Linda: Will you hold my packages for me.
She asked me to hold her packages for her.

2. Flight attendant: All passengers, please put your small bags under your seat.
She asked us to put our small bags under our seat.
