INTRODUCTION

I. Rationale of the Study

Academic stress among students has been a growing concern worldwide,

as it not only affects their mental well-being but also hampers their overall

academic performance. Guindaruhan National High School, located in Bacolod

City, Philippines, is no exception to this issue. To gain a comprehensive

understanding of the prevalence and impact of academic stress among the students

at Guindaruhan National High School, a quantitative study was conducted. This

study aimed to shed light on the current situation, identify key stressors, and

analyze the outcomes of academic stress on the students.

The increasing academic load, competition, and societal expectations have

resulted in high levels of stress among students. Academic stress can lead to a

variety of negative consequences, such as anxiety, depression, decreased

motivation, and even physical health problems. It is crucial to address this issue

effectively to promote a healthy learning environment and ensure the overall well-

being of students.
The study employed a quantitative research design to gather relevant data

on academic stress among the students. A sample of students from Guindaruhan

National High School was selected using stratified random sampling, which

considered factors like grade level and gender. The data collection process

involved the administration of a structured questionnaire to the selected

participants. The questionnaire comprised various items related to academic stress,

stressors, coping mechanisms, and perceived impact on academic performance.

The instrument used in this study was a validated questionnaire designed

specifically to assess academic stress among students. The questionnaire included

Likert-scale items, multiple-choice questions, and open-ended questions. It was

developed after an extensive review of existing literature on academic stress and

consultation with experts in the field. The questionnaire aimed to capture diverse

aspects of academic stress experienced by students at Guindaruhan National High

School.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to identify the frequency of academic stress experienced by

the students of Guindaruhan National Highschool, and to understand it’s Influence

on their overall well-being and academic performance. Moreover, this sought to

answer the following;

1. How often do you experience stress related to your academic performance?

2. On a scale of 1-5, rate the level of stress you feel during exams or major

assessments.

3. What are the main sources of academic stress for you?

4. Have you ever experienced physical symptoms due to academic stress? If so,

please describe.

5.On a scale of 1-5, rate the impact of academic stress on your mental well-

being.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The scope of this quantitative study is to assess the prevalence and impact

of academic stress among the 30 students of Guindaruhan National Highschool .

The study will aim to gather data from a representative sample of students across

different grade levels, using a structured questionnaire or survey instrument. The

study will explore various dimensions of academic stress, such as its causes,

symptoms, and its impact on students’ mental and physical health, academic

performance, and overall well-being. The delimitation of the study includes

focusing solely on Guindaruhan National Highschool and not including students

from other schools or educational institutions. Additionally, the study will not

address stress factors outside the academic domain, such as personal or family-

related stressors.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

1. Understanding the extent of academic stress: By conducting this study,

we can gain insights into the prevalence of academic stress among students

in Guindaruhan National High School. This information can help identify

the magnitude of the problem and provide a basis for implementing targeted

interventions.

2. Identifying factors contributing to academic stress: A quantitative study

can help identify various factors that contribute to academic stress, such as

workload, high expectations, competition, or lack of support. Understanding

these factors can help educators and policymakers develop strategies to

mitigate stressors and create a conducive learning environment.

3. Assessing the impact on students’ well-being: Academic stress can have

significant implications for students’ well-being, including mental health

issues, physical health problems, decreased academic performance, and

reduced engagement in extracurricular activities. By quantitatively

measuring the impact, this study can highlight the importance of addressing

academic stress and provide evidence for interventions aimed at improving

students’ overall well-being.

4. Informing tailored intervention programs: This study can contribute to

the development of targeted intervention programs to support students in

managing academic stress effectively. By understanding the unique stressors

faced by students in Guindaruhan National High School, educators can

design interventions specific to their needs, such as stress management

workshops, counseling services, or curriculum adjustments.

5. Comparing findings with other schools or regions: Conducting this study can

provide valuable benchmark data to compare the prevalence and impact of

academic stress among students in Guindaruhan National High School with

other schools or regions. Such comparisons can identify potential differences

or similarities and help share best practices in stress management across

different educational contexts.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Academic stress refers to the psychological and emotional strain

experienced by students due to the demands and pressures associated with their

academic pursuits. The prevalence of academic stress among students has been a

growing concern in recent years. This section will explore existing literature on

academic stress, its causes, and its impact on students’ mental health and academic

performance.

According to (Kwon,2014) academic stress can have a significant impact

on students’ mental and physical health. Students who experience chronic

academic stress are more likely to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression,

and sleep problems . They may also be more likely to engage in unhealthy coping

mechanisms, such as substance abuse and self-harm (Waseem et al., 2016).

Numerous studies have highlighted the high prevalence of academic stress

among students. A study by Smith et al. (2018) surveyed undergraduate students

and found that 70% reported experiencing moderate to high levels of academic

stress. Similarly, a study conducted by Johnson et al. (2020) among high school

students revealed that 80% reported experiencing stress related to academic

demands. These findings underscore the widespread nature of academic stress

among students.

Several factors contribute to academic stress among students. First and

foremost, the pressure to excel academically and meet high expectations from

parents, teachers, and society can significantly contribute to students’ stress levels

(Misra et al., 2019). Additionally, workload and time management issues,

competition among peers, fear of failure, and academic self-doubt are common

stressors faced by students (Hamaideh, 2011). The increasing reliance on

standardized tests and the constant need to perform well in exams also contribute

to students’ stress levels (Maher & Gross, 2019).

The impact of academic stress on students’ mental health and

overall well-being is substantial. Research has consistently shown a

strong association between academic stress and mental health issues

such as anxiety and depression (Yusoff, 2015). Students experiencing

high levels of academic stress are more likely to engage in maladaptive

coping strategies such as substance abuse and self-harm (Kumar &

Tadakamadla, 2017). Academic stress can also negatively affect

students’ academic performance, leading to decreased motivation,

impaired concentration, and lower grades (Levitzky & Raghavan, 2016).

The prevalence of academic stress among students is a

significant concern that impacts their mental health and academic

performance. Understanding the causes and consequences of academic

stress is crucial for educators, policymakers, and stakeholders in

developing effective interventions and support systems. By addressing

the underlying causes of academic stress and promoting stress

management skills, educational institutions can create a healthier and

more conducive learning environment for students. Further research is

warranted to explore specific strategies and interventions that can

effectively mitigate the prevalence and impact of academic stress among

students
