COMMUNIty interactions and

BRIDGE THE socio-cultural GAPs?
In response to the escalating trend of urbanization, where an estimated 60% of the global population will soon reside
in cities, the design of vertical apartments faces the challenge of optimizing limited space. However, the prevailing architectural
paradigm often neglects the crucial aspect of community interactions, leading to a sense of anonymity among residents. This
dissertation delves into addressing environmental concerns through sustainable practices and fostering social cohesion within the
urban landscape. In contrast to historical norms where community interactions were intrinsic to daily life, contemporary urban
dwellers often find themselves isolated amidst the hustle of city life.
This dissertation explores how sustainable design principles, incorporating features such as multipurpose
spaces, communal gardens, and farms, can create vibrant hubs for social interactions and instill a sense of belonging among
residents! An emphasis is placed on the need for prioritizing adaptability in designs. Living spaces must exhibit modularity to
accommodate diverse family sizes and adapt to evolving needs. The dissertation advocates for a transformative approach to
urban planning, urging stakeholders to not only fulfill the immediate requirements of residents but also to craft environments
that nurture dynamic and interconnected communities. Through a thorough exploration of sustainable architectural practices
and their impact on community dynamics, this dissertation underscores the pivotal role in facilitating social cohesion in urban
environments. By reconceptualizing living spaces beyond their structural function and incorporating elements that encourage
communal engagement, a significant contribution can be made to enhancing the overall well-being and quality of life for urban
dwellers.
AIM
• To study and understand the relationship between Architecture, Community
connectivity and sustainability
• To explore how architectural design can influence interactions within
communities and by incorporating the concept sustainable practices.
OBJECTIVE
• Analyze multiple case studies of residential projects such as Jala Vayu Vihara, Kere
mane by Kanade, Belapur housing by B V Doshi, LIC row housing by Correa to
understand community engagement from the perspective of different architects
• Tracing the ongoing trends to identify the functioning of present typologies and
how they are lacking community interactions
• Understanding the importance of sustainability and interrogating the methods of
bringing people together through it.

METHODOLOGIES

Case studies
• Analyzing multiple case studies of considering factors such as design principles,
community engagement, and sustainability features.

Interviews
• Conducting qualitative interviews with community members across different age
groups to gain in-depth insights about their daily experiences and understand the
ongoing trends
• Understanding when and where they wish to come together.
• Gathering their idea of community.

Comparative Analysis
• Comparing different architectural approaches by different architects and to
identify their methods, challenges, and successes.
Some problems listed in lotus bloom idea matrix had similar solutions overlapping with different problems. Hence those solutions
were taken forward as my main topic of dissertation and the rest of the matrix solutions are considered as sub concept
