Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module

understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

This module will provide you with information and activities that will
help you understand contemporary art forms based on the elements and
principles as well as with the forms of arts from the different regions.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Evaluate contemporary art forms based on the elements and

principles (CAR11//12CAP-0c-e-6); and
2. Compare forms of arts from the different regions
(CAR11//12CAP-0c-e-7)

Subtasks:
1. Identify the different elements, principles and classifications of arts.
2. Match the element or principle of art to its corresponding example.
3. Make an output that provides examples to each Form of Arts with a little
explanation.

Jumpstart

Activity 1: Read Me! Understand Me!

Directions:
Read the five contemporary art forms based on the elements and
principles as well as with the different forms of arts from the different
regions. Understand what you are reading.

Although these concepts are not entirely unique to contemporary art,

many artists today often go beyond the traditional elements and
principles in their work by using new concepts and approaches like the
ones listed below.

ELEMENTS OF ART

1. Appropriation is when an artist creates a new work of art by taking

preexisting images from other sources and modifies and/or incorporates
those images with new ones.

2. Performance refers to artwork created by or presented to an audience.

Performance as an element can also include the processes used by the
artist to create the work. This takes place when the process us ed to create
the artwork is more important than the finished work itself.

3. Space is the element of art through which both positive and negative areas
are defined or a sense of depth is achieved in a work of art.

4. Hybridity the blending of new or unusual

materials with traditional mediums. The incorporation of these materials,
such as recycled or industrial materials, plays an important role in the
meaning of the artwork.

5. Technology refers to the usage of technological advancements in the

creation of art works.

2
If the elements of art are your tools, the principles of art are how you put
them to work. It is where the style of art manipulates its substance. Harmony,
balance, rhythm, proportion, and emphasis are the principles of art.

PRINCIPLES OF ART

1. Harmony. This is achieved when all the elements of a thing are put
together to come up with a coherent whole.

2. Balance. Stability produced by even distribution of weight on each side of

the thing.

3. Rhythm. This principle of art describes the movement in or of an artwork.

Rhythm is created by the variety and repetition of elements in a work of
art that come together to create a visual tempo or beat.

4. Proportion. Within the realm of the elements and principles of art,

proportion is the relationship of elements in an artwork to the whole a nd
to one another.

5. Emphasis. Giving proper importance on one or more parts of the thing or

the whole thing itself.

principles-of-art/

CLASSIFICATION OF ART FORMS

1. Visual Arts are those perceived by the eyes

2. Audio-Visual Arts are those forms perceived by both ears (audio) and eyes
(video).
3. Literary Arts are those presented in the written mode and it is intended to be
read.

Hybridity
Contemporary artists are now as innovative as ever. In traditional
painting, only few materials are of conventional use. Contemporary visual
artist, on the other hand, may opt to use coffee for painting or carve miniature
sculptures using crayons. Hybridity in contemporary arts as the mixing of
unlikely materials to produce an artwork.

Technology
Technology is a reality in the present-day world, and contemporary artist
have used technology in the creation and dissemination of works of art. When
MTV first went into airwaves in 1981, video became part of the human
interaction. The video phenomenon was further pushed by debut of Youtube
that allowed everyone with Internet connection to post and share videos.
Contemporary artists have used video and Internet as way of propagating art.

PRINCIPLES OF ART

Harmony

This is achieved when the elements of an artwork come together in a

unified way. Certain elements are repeated yet still look and feel similar. Not
monotony and not chaos, harmony is that perfectly honed combination of
both. This is the most essential factor in a composition.

Lesson-1
Balance
Artists combine elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to
a work of art. Symmetry and asym metry are manifestatio ns of balance.
Classified as FORMAL and INFORMAL BALANCE.

1. Formal Balance- exists if the weights at equal distance from the center are
equal. It is also called as symmetrical balance.

7
Radial symm etry exist when the same measure occurs from the central
point to the end of every radius. This symmetry applies to round objects or
those with radii like stars and stars and starfishes.

Lesson-1

2. Informal Balance- present when the left and the right sides of the thing,
though not identical in appearance, still display an even distribution of
weight. It is also known as asymm etrical or occult balance.

Lesson-1
Rhythm

Rhythm is the continuous use of a motif or repetitive pattern of a

succession of similar or identical items. It can be achieved by alternation (use
of two patterns alternately), radiation (repetition of motif from the center or
toward it), progression (use of motifs of varying sizes that is, from the smallest
to the largest, or vice versa), parallelism (use of a pattern with an equal
distance from each other).

Lesson-1

Emphasis

Achieved by means of size or proportion, shape, color, line position,

and variety. More often than not, the artist emphasizes the one with the
bigger size or proportion, the one with a different shape or color, the one with
striking lines, the one positioned at the center and the one that is unique.
