DAYLIGHTING

North-facing house are often darker but have softer light

compared to other directions. Back of house are prone to receive
heat and wind compared to front causing front part of house to
be more moist due to lack of sunlight and heat.

LIGHT ANALYSIS & distribution

Data was collected at 9AM, 1PM and 6PM.Daylight factor was used
indicator for light analysis of comfort. Building Research Establishment
Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) states that living rooms
should achieve a minimum average daylight factor of at least 1.5%.
LEED states that through computer simulation that the applicable spaces
achieve daylight illuminance levels of a minimum of 270 lux and a
maximum of 5400 lux in a clear sky condition.

Formula below was used to calculate daylight factor :

Internal and external illuminance was both measured using using a lux
meter on mobile device in unit of lux. Table below shows a series of data
collected on site during different time period

Time Internal Illuminance (lux)

9AM 40 35 40 37 47 45 55 22
1PM 63 67 72 34 114 43 160 27
6PM 45 50 60 150 72 50 102 35

Time External Illuminance (lux) of different days

Average value was used for calculation to obtain a more consistent and

precise daylight factor (%).

Part II : Analysis (predict) (problem analysis )

Brightness of room is lower than comfort level but still in

accecptable range. The main reason living room was lacking in
direct lighting with only one window directed to sunlight source
and the North-facing of house makes it less bright. However,
sunlight of a north-facing house would be softer and cooler all
day long considering climate in Malaysia.
