Poverty- can either be absolute or relative according to Schaefer (2016)

Material,subsistance or absolute poverty is a condition characterised by severe deprivation of basic

needs including food, clothing, shelter and health care (giddens2013)this refers to the lack of basic
needs Therefore it can be absolute, Material when total earnings become insufficient to obtain
fundermental survival prerequisites for the sustainance of health and physical efficiency

Relative poverty- according to Schaefer it is a condition were individuals and families are marginalised or
excluded from participation in social activities and access to services such as health individuals are said
to be living in relative poverty when they lack the resources to obtain the types of diet and participate in
activities in their society this implies that individuals and families are deprived of the opportunities
comfort and respect in which the majority enjoy they are said to be living below the poverty datum line
therefore relative poverty may be closely linked to social exclusion
