Introduction
In studying, there are many factors needed. Students need to be
physically, emotionally, and psychologically healthy in order to survive
the struggles they may face and to be competitive students showing their
full capacity and talents (Kurtus, 2012). Nutritious foods, healthy living,
support from the parents and family, socialization, and many other helpful
things should be practiced because it can affect the student’s enactment in
their schools, especially in such subjects that involves physical
activities that uses the energy of the body. Nowadays, Poverty had been
widely spread and still emerging because it is really felt by all of the
people even the younger ones. The phenomena happening nowadays add to the
burden of the Filipino people such as the deflation of our economy that
causes starvation and severe poverty as seen in the news. These had brought
malnutrition as one of the consequences and sadly, the children which is
the hope of our country being the primary victims of this phenomenon. In
that case, many children suffer from malnutrition or nutritional deficiency
which leads to failures and weakened school performance status because this
occurrence has an impact especially in activities and subjects that
involves physical health and physical activities.

In this research, the researcher wants to show how the nutritional

status is related to the student’s academic performance in P.E. and provide
some factors of why they suffer from nutrient deficiency or to reason out
their nutritional status presently. Likewise, the researcher also wants to
recommend actions on preventing or lessening number of individuals
suffering from this phenomenon as well as improve their performance in
Physical education as a bonus in avoiding it.

Preliminary Literature Review

According to WHO (2016), Malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses

or imbalances of nutrients or energy that a person takes.

According to Martorell, the problem of malnutrition in poor societies

is best viewed as a “syndrome of developmental impairment,” that results to
growth failure; delayed motor, cognitive, and behavioral development. It
also results to weakened immune system, and increased illness and death.
Growth delay is frequently found in association with other problems, such
as deficiency in vitamin A and anaemia. These collections of nutritional
problems show in times of when people are still weak, namely in utero and
during the first three years of life, that affect at least one third of all
children in developing countries.

The nutritional status of a student affects their school performance,

is related to their cognition, and also to their social life. According to
Karande and Kulkarni Education is one of the most important aspects of
human resource development. Poor school performance results in the child
having a low self-esteem, and also causes major stress to the parents.
There are many reasons for children to struggle at school, like medical
problems, below average intelligence, specific learning disability,
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, emotional problems, poor socio-
cultural home environment, psychiatric disorders and environmental causes.
Malnutrition is one of the reasons of the poor school performance of the
students.

According to The British International School Abu Dhabi, Physical

Education helps the students to be developed personally and socially by
working as individual, by groups or teams, establishing concepts of
fairness and personal and social responsibility. Taking different role and
responsibility such as leadership, coaching and officiating are also a way
in developing the student.

Physical education forms the students’ capability and confidence to

participate into physical activities, developing wide range of skills,
ability to use tactics strategies and building of ideas to perform
successfully which may become the central part of their lives in or out of
school. All of these results to them, developing the confidence to take
part in different physical activities as well as learning the value of
healthy and active lifestyles.

According to Curt Suplee (everyday science explained, pg. 238) an

average human normally eat foods that contain 2% simple carbohydrates, 15%
of proteins, 18% of refined sugar, 20% of complex carbohydrates, and 45% of
fats. However, humans should eat foods that contain 10% of simple
carbohydrates, 15% of proteins, 20% of fats, and 55% of complex
carbohydrates.
Nutritional deficiency happens when the body doesn’t get the necessary
amount of nutrient in a food or it doesn’t absorb it. These deficiencies
can lead to many health problems such as digestion problems, skin
disorders, stunted or defective bone growth, and so as dementia.
It depends on one’s age on how much the amount of each nutrient that
he or she can absorb, but in some circumstances, the body may be unable to
absorb some nutrients even if a person consumes it, which leads to a
nutritional deficiency.
Poor diet that lacks necessary nutrients, disease or treatment that
weakens nutrient absorption are the main causes of nutritional deficiencies
(Olsen, 2018).

Objectives of the study

In general, the objective of this research is to know the effects of
the nutritional status of the students to their lives as students.
The following are the specific objectives of this study.
1. Distinguish the average nutritional status and nutrients needed by an
individual.
2. Understand what is malnutrition or nutritional deficiency.
3. Know how malnutrition affects the student’s school performance
physically, emotionally, psychologically, and mentally.
4. Recognize the causes of malnutrition.
5. Suggest recommendations and ideas on lessening or preventing
malnutrition and nutrient deficiency.

Research questions:
 What is the average nutritional status and nutrients needed of an
individual?
 What is Malnutrition?
 How does malnutrition affect the lives of the students?
 What are the causes of nutritional deficiency?
 What are the actions that needs to be implemented in order to help
decrease or prevent nutritional deficiency?

Methodology
In this research, the researcher used the Quantitative Design in
conducting this study, aiming to answer the problem and by using and
presenting statistical or numerical data at discovering how many people
think, act or feel in a specific way. The researcher used the
Correlational type of quantitative research which uses statistics and
numbers in elaborating and showing the nutritional status’ relationship to
the student’s academic performance in the school. Survey is the instrument
that is used for this research in discovering the results. As for the
tools, the researcher used several kinds of questionnaires such as multiple
choice, multiple response of the guided response-recognition type according
to form and descriptive data, quantified data, intensity of feeling,
emotion, or attitude type, and reasoning type of questionnaire, according
to the kind of data asked for, for the said instrument. In regards with the
sampling method, the researcher uses the judgmental type of non-probability
sampling where the possible respondents will be chosen accordingly by the
researcher herself after finding an irregularity on the respondent’s BMI,
weight and height according to their age that fits to what the researcher
is studying and based on the researcher’s topic. The researcher based the
data presentation analysis and interpretation of collected data of
computing the BMI, malnourishment by age and height by the graphs and
charts from the internet as stated in the bibliography.

All of this will answer some questions to the readers about the
explained topic and give the researchers a better understanding about their
research.
