INTRODUCTION
A nutritious diet is crucial for maintaining good health and well-being. It offers protection against a variety of chronic non-communicable
illnesses like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Follow a healthy diet and its benefits. A varied diet that includes plenty of vegetables
and fruits is a valuable source of vitamins, minerals, fibers, and antioxidants. Consuming vegetables and fruits are highly beneficial for
individuals with obesity, heart disease, strokes, and other cancers. Excessive consumption of unhealthy fat sources, particularly saturated
and processed trans fatty acids; indicates a significantly higher risk of heart disease and stroke disease.
Dietary habits are defined as “the habitual decision of individuals or a group of people regarding what foods they eat” When it comes to
eating, everyone has different poor habits. The listed are common poor dietary behavior; eating close to bedtime, skipping meals, eating
too fast, mindless eating, and stress eating (UC Davis Health). While, social determinants of health (SDOH) are the conditions in the
environment where people are born, live, learn work, play, worship, and age that affects a wide range of health functioning and quality of
life that have outcomes, and risks. Grouped into five domains mainly; (1) Economic stability, (2) Education Access and Quality, (3) Health
Care Access and Quality, (4) Neighborhood and Build Environment, and (5) Social and Community Context.
Nurses are in charge of meeting patients' basic requirements, including those related to nutrition, among other healthcare workers.
Because of this, nurses are essential members of the multidisciplinary team that provides patients with nutrition-related education and
care (Arroyo et al., 2008). This is an enormous barrier to the best possible nursing care since it makes it difficult to manage patient's
dietary demands and puts them at risk of developing malnutrition and all of its complications (Ostrowska et al., 2021). In 2023, a thorough
search of the literature was carried out and published by the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus databases. Nursing
students' inadequate understanding of both general and specialty nutrition revealed a deficiency in their comprehension of nutritional
self-care (National Library of Medicine, 2023).
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
6. Determine the significant relationship between social determinants factors of health and how it impacts the dietary habits of
nursing students at the University of Cabuyao.
7. What is the recommended action plan for nursing students to improve dietary habits?
HYPOTHESES
Based on the research questions, the alternative hypothesis of the study is:
H1: There is a significant relationship between demographic profile and dietary habits.
H1: There is a significant relationship between social and cultural context influencing
dietary habits.
H1: There is a significant impact between economic stability in food choices and
nutritional practices
H1: There is a significant relationship between increased access to nutritional
information and healthier food habits
SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS
This research focuses on finding out whether the social determinants factors directly
impact dietary habits, and the dietary habits and intake of selected nursing students.
Recent research papers and studies will be utilized as references in what affects the eating
patterns and food intake of students. The target respondents will be BS - nursing students
in Pamantasan ng Cabuyao from all levels, with no existing illness present and are
mentally capable of answering the research instrument.
This study is only limited to performing on different levels of nursing students of the
University of Cabuyao in the City of Cabuyao, Laguna during the academic year of 2023 -
2024. The study will also exclude nursing students who have a pre-existing illness prior to
participation and are mentally incapable. The study will not include other courses from the
given locale, and the study will only imply factors under the economic stability and social
and community context. And the research will not extend to the other social determinants
factors of health, but will mainly focus on two (2) chosen social determinants of health
(SDOH) factors.
