Overview
In the following pages a clear description of the menu item ’Reports’ is given.
Moreover, the single menu items, structured in their groups, are explained.
The ’Reports’ menu is composed as follows:
• Delete from Page: Removes all objects from the page to the buffer list
• Lock Selection Position: Locks the selected object position. When set, the
object cannot be resized or moved
• Unlock Selection Position: Annuls the object locked state.
The zoom factor is always available on the upper right-hand corner, when dis-
playing a report page. This zoom factor can be modified directly with the key-
board or in the pull-down menu in order to change the page’s display. The zoom
factor can also be changed by all zoom commands and can vary from 8,33% to
6400%.
2.4.1 Zoom In
The zoom factor, the scroll bar and the display are changed, according to the
zoom selection.
The selected option shows the zoom mode and the currently selected zoom factor.
Here it is possible to change the zoom factor and/or the zoom mode.
Fit to Screen
In the toolbar, there is an icon to fit the screen to width. This button switches
between fit to screen and real size (100% zoom factor). If one of these modes is
selected, it is shown as checked except for the last enervate ’Fit to Screen’
Selecting a checked mode will uncheck it, selecting another mode will uncheck
the last checked mode.
If the editing mode is selected, all objects are displayed with a rectangle border.
If one object is selected, it will be displayed with a red border.
The red bordered object will be used for all edit command acting on a single
object (copy, paste, delete, move,)
rectangle border
The ’Edit Mode’ is explained in more detail in section 3.1 ’Editing Reports’.
The submenu item ’Show Grid’ will display/hide the grid. The submenu item
’Define Grid’ will display the grid attributes dialog box to setup the grid parame-
ters.
• Restructure
The tab list is changed in a way, that the tab number will follow the object
position in the page from left to right and from top to bottom.
• Redistribute
The tab list is changed to remove the gap in the tab numbering, the order itself
is not changed i.e. if tab list was 1, 3, 7, then it is changed to 1, 2, 3.
See ’Using the Tab List’ for a detailed explanation and examples.
2.5.2 Z List
There is one command available to reorganize the Z order list:
• Redistribute
Changes the Z order of each object from 1 to Nmax (Nmax is the number of
the objects in the page) to remove the gaps.
In order to show the Z numbers, click on the right mouse button, then select the
item ’Show Z Order’.
2.5.3 Objects
This menu item is divided into three submenus in order to modify object
attributes and one submenu to change the display in the status bar.
• Positions
• Tab
• Z order
• Switch Status Info
2.5.3.1 Positions
The submenu item ’Position’ is divided into four parts. The position and size of
the objects can be adjusted and the current positions can be locked and unlocked
here.
• Align
Is used to change the position of the selected objects (belonging to the selected
list). A dialog box is displayed to select alignment options
• Size
Is used to change the size of the selected objects (belonging to the selected
list). A dialog box is displayed to select resizing options.
• Lock/Unlock Position
With these items the user can lock or unlock the current position of a selected
object.
2.5.3.2 Tab
This submenu includes commands to work on tab numbers of selected objects.
• Set
Enter the tab number directly using the keyboard, the object with the selected
tab number is displayed.
• Increment
Moves the tab number after the next object in the tab list, i.e. the tab list is 1,
2, 3, 5. If the selected object has tab number 2, after increment the list will be
1, 3, 4, 5 and the selected object will have the tab number 4.
• Decrement
Moves the object in the tab list before the previous object, i.e. the tab list is 1,
2, 3, 4. If the selected object has tab number 3, after decrement the list will be
1, 2, 3, 4 and the selected object will have the tab number 1.8.
• Show/Hide
The tab number is displayed/hidden by activating this command. This can
also be achieved by clicking on the right mouse button and selecting ’Show
Tab Order’.
2.5.3.3 Z order
This submenu includes commands to work on Z order numbers of selected
objects.
• To Foreground: Changes the Z order number of the selected object to the big-
gest one, i.e. to the end of the list and last displayed
• To Background: Changes the Z order number of the selected object to the
smallest one, i.e. to the start of the list and first displayed
• Show/Hide: Displays/Hides the Z order number. This can also be achieved by
clicking on the right mouse button and selecting ’Show Z Order’.
Z order
Number
In the second mode, the mouse coordinates in the page are displayed.
In the following chapter you will get a quick survey of the editing of pages and
reports. Here new reports and report pages can be defined and the existing ones
can be modified.
Here the user can enter a new name for the page and define the pages properties.
In the following chapter all functions of the ’Edit Mode’ are illustrated.
In the ’Edit Mode’ (Select: ’Reports > Edit Mode’) each page of the current
selected report can be modified. Changes apply on the current displayed page.
After selecting the ’Edit Mode’, the objects on the page can be modified. It is only
possible to use edit functions on a focused object.
An object is focused if it is surrounded by a red, rectangle border, the other
objects are surrounded black. There is always one focused object (except on an
empty page) and therefore with a red border
4.1.2 Warning
• All functions which are explained in this section (except Show Tab Num and
Show Z Order) apply to the selected object (having the focus).
• These functions are only available if no zoom is selected. So you can zoom in
and out while editing a page. But don't forget to switch back to normal mode
before using edit functions!
• When the focus is set on the background graphic of a page it is sometimes not
visible.
It is advisable to remove this background object if possible.
• When you delete an object in the page, the editor automatically sets the focus
to the next object in the Z order list and adjusts the display to see this new
object. This could move the display from one corner of the page to the other,
especially if the zoom factor is very high!
You can enter a new width and height for the selected object and confirm with the
’Ok’ button or cancel with the ’Cancel’ button.
Both operations will open a quick-access menu. Here you can select the ’Show Z
Order’-command. If the ’Show Z Order’ is checked, it will be unchecked and the
Z order will be hidden.
Z Number
If the ’Show Tab Order’ is checked, it will be unchecked and the tab order will be
hidden.
• With the main menu
Use the ’Reports > Objects > Tab > Show/Hide’ command.
This will open a quick-access menu from which you can select:
• Increment Tab: Exchanges the position in the tab list with the next one.
• Decrement Tab: Exchanges the position in the tab list with the pre-
vious one.
• Set Tab Num: Sets the position directly by entering the tab order num-
ber in an input dialog box
The object is removed without any confirmation. The object can be recovered
with the ’Paste’ command.
• With the keyboard
Press the ’Del’ key.
The object can also be pasted in another page of the displayed report. In this case,
the position of the pasted object is not changed in the new page.
It is not possible to copy and paste objects between two different reports.
You can adjust all selected list objects with the same change in one or both direc-
tions.
The system computes the smallest and the biggest width and height in the selec-
tion list.
You can then change all objects of the selection list to one of these computed sizes
or enter your own size.
Click on the ’Ok’ button to accept the changes, or otherwise on the ’Cancel’ but-
ton.
Select the alignment type in both directions to select the required adjustment.
• Horizontal
• No change: No action
• Left sides: Align all selected objects to the left side of the focused object
• Centers: Align all selected objects horizontally to the center of the focused
object
• Right sides: Align all selected objects to the right side of the focused
object
• Vertical
• No change: No action
• Tops: Align all selected objects to the top of the focused object
• Centers: Align all selected objects vertically to the center of the focused
object
• Bottoms: Align all selected objects to the bottom of the focused object
Objects
In the following pages the objects and their functionalities are explained in detail.
The predefined objects are grouped in the same manner that is applied if you
paste objects with the ’Select Object’ dialog box.
To insert a new object, move the display cursor to an empty part of the report
while holding the left mouse button pressed and then release the button. A square
or rectangular frame will immediately appear and after a short time the ’Select
Object’ dialog will be displayed for inserting predefined objects in the report.

• a tree
• an additional window to input more complex values
6.2.1 Position
Here can be adjusted where the object will exactly be orientated on the page. Left/
Right/Top/Bottom means the distance from the object to the Left/Right/Top/Bot-
tom of the page.
6.2.2 Orientation
Here can be adjusted where in the object the designation appears e.g.:
On the left hand: horizontal: right\vertical: bottom and on the right hand: horizontal: left\vertical:
top
6.2.3 Font
Here can typeface and color be adjusted.
6.2.4 Frame
By the use of this item, different adjustments for the frame can be made. As for
example: color, width, 3D-frame or not, title, font and background.
6.2.5 Background
Background color and\or brush can be adjusted here.
In order to create a clearly arranged report, it is recommended to use always the
same adjustments for frame, font, orientation and background.
The actual tab order is 26 24 29 (tab is 1 2 3). If you want to move the object 26
after 24 in the tab sequence by using the ’Increment Tab’ command, the object tab
numbering becomes:
Moving the object 29 in front of object 26 in the tab sequence by using the ’Dec-
rement Tab’ command results in the following:
A new level is added again and the tab sequence is now 24 29 26.
You can also give your own number with the ’Set Tab Num’ command by using
the same level system.
7.2 Restructure
If you have a well working tab order it is not advisable to use this command.
Alternatively use the ’Redistribute’ command if you only want to change the tab
numbering but not the order itself.
The ’Restructure’ command reorganizes the tab numbering system by using the
page geometry and will change the tab number of all objects in the page using the
following rule:
• The first tab number will be set to the object at the upper left-hand side of the
page.
• Then the system will look for objects to the right and bottom of the page until
the last object is reached at the right bottom.
• By using the tab key, the focus will always move to the right and down until
the last tab object is reached and then start again from the object with the first
tab number.
For example:
The next figure displays a typical tab numbering set after editing and moving
objects:
7.3 Redistribute
This command will not change the tab order itself, but only the numbering by
removing levels and gaps in order to get a continuous numbering starting at num-
ber one and increments by one for each new object in the tab list.
The result of this command is in the example:
This example shows that the tab numbering system includes gaps and dot levels.
The ’Redistribute’ command will change the numbering as follows:
Reports.eds Creation
At starting time, EDS is looking for a report.eds file in the engine directory.
If no report.eds is found, but a views.eds file exists, this one is converted into the
new format in a new report.eds file. If no views.eds file is found, an empty
report.eds file is created.
8.1.1 Description
The description key includes the following information:
• Version = 3.0.1: Actual report version number
• Type = ViewImport: Origin of the report, in this case the import from a
view.eds can be newly built if it is created with a new engine without
views.eds
• NbGraphics = 30: Number of graphics in the report
• NbPages = 16: Number of pages in the report
• NbReports = 8: Number of views in the report
These ’Nb’-values are only displayed for information and are computed each
time the report is loaded.
• EndConv = yes: Flag indicating that conversion would have been finished
successfully, if an object error has been detected during the conversion of a
views.eds to a report.eds, these errors are shown in the following lines:
Error_0 = VIEW_convert error in dll:
D:\eds_development\eds\exe\VIEW_P.DLL(3)pages; Abnahme 9-Zyl; object
no:136
NbError = 1
