Introduction

v Computer networking devices are physical or

virtual components used to facilitate communication and
data exchange between multiple computing devices within a
network. These devices play a crucial role in establishing,
maintaining, and managing connections within a network
infrastructure.
v Types of Networking Devices:
➢ Repeater.
➢ HUB.
➢ Bridge.
➢ Switch.
➢ Router.
➢ A repeater is a basic network device
Repeater that operates at the physical layer of
the OSI model. It functions
by amplifying and
regenerating weak or degraded
signals, extending their reach in a
network.
➢ Function: Extends network reach by
boosting signal strength and quality.
➢ Operation: Receives signals,
regenerates them, and retransmits
them.
➢ Benefits: Increases network
distance.
➢ Limitations: Can introduce signal
collisions in heavily congested
networks.
HUB ➢ It has multi-port repeater.
➢ Layer-1 device(Physical Device).
➢ It will carry electrical signal.
➢ It is a half-duplex.
➢ Cannot store MAC address.
➢ Always broadcast.
➢ Single collision domain.
➢ LAN Device.
Bridge

➢ It is a layer-2 Device.
➢ Used to connect multiple network or LAN
segment.
➢ Filter data traffic.
➢ Bridges reduce the amount of traffic on a
LAN by dividing it into segments.
➢ It has 2 collision domain.
➢ Intelligent device.
Switch
➢ Layer-2 device.
➢ Full Duplex.
➢ Maintain CAM(Content Accessible Memory).
➢ First Broadcast, then Unicast & Multicast.
➢ Every port or switches is separate collision domain.
➢ Switch has 1 broadcast domain.
➢ Host of switch share the same IP address space.
Router

Layer- 3 device.
Connect 2 or more network.
Inter-networking device.
Uses IP address, same in for off packet.
Maintain Routing Table.
2/4/8 port.
This is a WAL device.
