Answer sheet for Questions page 167-173

1- A device that uses less energy do the same job is more efficient. If we use
efficient devices we will save more energy…
2- A- Total energy input = 400j
Useful energy (Sound) = 50j
Total energy input = Wasted energy + useful energy

Wasted energy = total input – useful energy = 400 – 50 = 350 joules

b- Efficiency = wasted/total x 100 = 50/400 x 100 = 12.5 %

1- Total energy input = 1000 J

Wasted energy in the boiler= 200J
Wasted energy in the turbines=400J
Wasted energy in the generator=50J

Energy diagram:
Chemical energy  Heat (in the boiler) + Kinetic (turbines) + Kinetic (generator
spins) + electricity

Total energy input = Wasted (Boiler + turbines + generator) + useful

energy(electric energy)

1000 = (200 + 400 + 50) + electric energy

Electric energy = 1000 – 200-400-50 = 350 J

2- Open ended question – related to task D done in class.

a- The starting temperature of water needs to be the same in each kettle. The
energy supplied to the kettles
b- For small volumes of water, the most efficient is kettle A since it takes less time
to boil 300, 400 and 500 cm3 of water as seen in the table.
c- For larger volumes of water, kettle B is more efficient since it takes less time to
boil 600 ad 700 cm3 of water.

a- As the time progresses from the year 1990 to year 2010, there is a general
increase in the electrical production in TWh. The lease electrical production was
in the year 1990 and the most electrical production was in 2010.
b- As the time progresses from year 1990 to year 2010,the cities and populations
are growing larger, which means cities and industries are getting bigger, thus,
this requires more electricity.

a- Wood has low level of pollution produced.

b- It has lowest energy content and the highest cost.
c- Natural gas would be the best since it has high energy content and lower level of
pollution.
