Implications of urban expansion on land use and land cover:
towards sustainable development of Mega Manila,
Philippines

What are the primary objectives of the study conducted in Mega Manila?

Due to expected population growth for the next couple of years, ensuring the
sustainability of the cities is essential. Proposing an urban expansion is one of the best
solutions that can be attained in the present that serves as a preparation for the
possible challenges that may occur when the population continues to grow. But, this
idea will face a lot of challenges since it can affect the environmental sector. So, this
study aims to determine the impact of the urban expansion in the land use and
infrastructures in Mega Manila.

What methods were used in the study?

Since this study is crucial to both the environmental and community sectors, it needs
deep understanding and analysis. With this, a lot of data needs to be considered in
order to have precise and accurate analyses. The study used land change modeller
through ArcGIS to produce sustainable strategies and understand the landscape
pattern, change process and the future scenario of the land changes and by using
Normalized Entropy Method to understand the land use pattern analysis within the
scope area of the study.

What were the main findings regarding land use changes between 1989 to 2010?

With the use of land change modeller process, the changes in the land use between
1989 to 2010 was studied. The outcome was analyzed accurately using the Google
earth pro and ArcGIS and it turns out that more than 10% accuracy rate was deducted
from the land use in 1989 to 2010. This implies that from 1989 to 2010 there’s a change
in forest land as well as in the land use sectors.

How does the study predict the 2030 scenario for Mega Manila?

Using the ArcGIS Land Change Modeler and the model from the land change from 1989
to 2010, the scenario for 2030 was generated. It serves as a carry up the analysis of
impact of urban expansion on land use. In other words, it discusses the possible effect
of urban expansion.
What implications do these findings have for future urban planning and
sustainability in the Philippines?
