Homework 1

Due by Wednesday, 27 March 2024

1. Show that Reynolds Transport Theorem reduces to Leibnitz Rule for a multivariate function
f (x, t):
Z b(x) ! Z b(x)
d  d  d ∂
f (x, t) dt = f x, b(x) · b(x) − f x, a(x) · a(x) + f (x, t) dt
dx a(x) dx dx a(x) ∂x

2. Derive the conservation of mass in cylindrical coordinates by:

(a) applying the conservation law to an infinitesimal control volume,

(b) using the definition of material derivative with relevant definitions and identities from
calculus.

3. Derive the r-component of the Navier Stokes Equations for a Newtonian fluid with constant
viscosity in the cylindrical coordinates by:

(a) applying the conservation law to an infinitesimal control volume,

(b) using the relevant definitions and identities from calculus. For this part, start from the
following equation.
DV~ 1
= ~g − ∇p + ν∇2 V~
Dt ρ
4. Consider the following two versions of the energy equation:
De
ρ = −∇ · q~00 + σ : ∇V (1)
Dt
DT Dp
ρcp = βT + k∇2 T + µΦ (2)
Dt Dt
Explain the steps needed to obtain eqn.(2) from eqn.(1). Emphasize the additional assump-
tions and conditions needed for eqn.(2) to be valid.

The symbols and terminology follow the lecture notes unless otherwise is noted.
