students the opportunity to try out what conducting an
LCA might take. We also have to extract material
quantities from drawings every now and then in our

but leaves out the operational modules B6 (energy use)
and B7 (water use)
Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions are basically related to the
organisational level of emissions. LCA assessment is
more on project / product level and all the emissions
usually fall into a certain scope within the GHG protocol
(scopes 1, 2 or 3) depending on how the specific
organisation is connected to the source of the emission.
E.g. all the materials we buy for the building (A1-A3) from
external actor would go to scope 3 emissions.

An assessment that only considers the initial materials’
impacts is what we call a cradle to gate assessment. If
we assess just from A1 to A3 life cycle stages then it is
cradle to gate assessment.

operational carbon of the assessment. All the other
modules represent embodied carbon. When assessed
together, they make up an whole life cycle assessment.

biogenic materials, such as wood and other fibrous
materials. The CO2 absorbed by the plants is turned to
carbon that stays within the material as long as the
material exists, and emits back to the atmosphere as
co2 when the material decomposes
Hi Mark, this a very good question! basically, wood
products, when they come from a sustainably managed
forest can be considered carbon neutral. With changes
in forestry practices, the land-use and land-use change
associated carbon flows can actually turn the product
into carbon negative, BUT only for the biogenic carbon
part. Other parts of the production chain do cause
emissions that usually make the products carbon
positive (processing, transport, installation and so on).
So all in all it would be di icult to find a product that is
carbon negative. So both of the methods consider that
the biogenic carbon moves from atmosphere to product
and back to atmosphere, but the part from other sources
(fuels) stay within the system.

Hi Charlie, sorry of being unclear! Yes even if it is part of
the A1-A3 module, in our tools the biogenic content is
reported in its own column based on the requirements
for reporting for GLA specifically. So you can consider
that it is part of the product stage and then re-released
in C3 module. But if you are only assessing A1-A5
modules, the tools would give you the results
automatically without needing to minus the biogenic
content from the A1 module.

dataabse already. If not, you can ask for it to be added by
email to support@oneclicklca.com. If there is no EPD at
all and no generic material as well, then you can either
use a proxy(closest match) or create a private datapoint
yourself and use it in your assessment.
Hi Dennis, for retrofit it can be hard to get the quantites
for existing materials (one could use Carbon Designer
for getting these in One Click), but if you have them you
can mark these as reused materials and then add all the
new materials as you would calculate the full life cycle
for these and also include the B and C module
emissions for the existing materials.
If you are using EPDs made according to EN15804+A2,
the biogenic carbon is reported in the EPD. For other
sources you might need to do some background digging
to find out what the actual content it. The Carbon
footprint standard also contains information on how to
calculate the biogenic carbon content.

ISO 21031 all contain quite strict rules on how an EPD
