4. What might be the reason for the use of the modes?

From the first picture, I think the I can conclude that the most salient mode used in this picture is
visual. However, we can breakdown the visual aspect such as the color of the background, the
expression of the child, and even the damage that had been done to the paper. This picture itself
without further explanation may leave the readers confused. Therefore, in this article, the writer
explains what’s in the picture by adding information below the picture which is considered as
verbal. If we look at this picture, we can see that there is a child whose face has been mistakenly
damaged with the beige colored background. Beside the visual mode that’s apparent, I assume
that there is also gesture mode in this picture which is visible through the way the kid glances. I
also think that the verbal relates to the picture by restating message of the picture which means
verbal in this article delivers corresponding message to the other mode, such as visual.

According to Kress, G., & Van Leeuwen, T. (2001), multimodal can enhance communication,
increasing expressiveness and clarity of a message. As I’ve mentioned previously, this picture
combines some of modes which includes visual, verbal, and gestural. Furthermore, the
combination of modes makes the reader assumes that the child in the picture is the child who was
reported missing. I assume that the writer of this article utilizes this picture to give the readers
initial picture about what’s the topic about and who’s reported missing in the article. In addition,
the type of this picture is realist since it shows a real photo of the missing child. This picture
functions as symbolical picture due to the absence of action in the picture. Therefore, the picture,
at the first place, deliver a mysterious atmosphere to the readers and also the sense of
condolences.

In the second picture, I do think that the most salient mode used in the picture is also visual.
However, there is also verbal mode in this picture which tells story. This place was where the kid
in the first picture last seen. Therefore, implicitly, this picture tells us that the child had ever gone
to that place and was disappeared. In other words, the verbal restates the message of other mode
exists in this picture.

The picture is considered realist since it shows a photo of a real lake. Moreover, this picture
functions as symbolical picture due to the absence of action. As stated by Kress, G., & Van
Leeuwen, T. (2006) visual elements can be used to emphasize key points or information in a text
or speech, making it more memorable and impactful. Therefore, it’s clear that the impact of the
second picture can be perceived by how it emphasizes the information of where the kid gone
missing. The writer uses this picture to give projection to the readers where the kid was last seen.
Also, the spatial aspect of the picture shows that the inability of Adrien to survive in such an
isolated lake with unknown water depth and entity that lives within.
The third picture in this article involves the same child as in the first picture. From my
perspective, these are the same photos that are printed in different material. The verbal of this
picture says that it’s taken from the old newspaper due to its texture and color. Moreover, I do
think that the verbal of this picture also restates the message of visual since it explains the
background of the picture and describes what’s involved in the picture.

In my opinion, the third picture is a repetition of the first picture but with better quality. I do
think that this picture provides clearer image of the child that’s obscure in the first image. This
picture is considered as realist since it shows the picture of the kid who had gone missing.
Moreover, it functions as symbolical picture since it represents the portrait of the participant
who’s mentioned in the verbal. I do think that the writer put this picture to give a clearer
presentation of the participant when also indicate the readers that this picture is taken from
newspaper.
In the last photo, I think the most salient mode is verbal. It’s due to the amount of text in the
picture. The picture itself is considered visual mode, but the content within the picture is mostly
verbal. n this mode, meaning is conveyed through written or spoken language. In the context of a
picture with newspaper text, the words and sentences within the text are the primary means of
conveying information and meaning. The verbal/linguistic semiotic mode relies on the use of
language, including words, sentences, and symbols, to communicate messages, ideas, or
information.

Furthermore, I do think that the modes (verbal, spatial, visual) elaborates each other to deliver
the message that this case was difficult to solve. As the verbal being the most salient, we know
that Verbal communication is a fundamental aspect of linguistics, encompassing spoken and
written language. However, the information in the newspaper is not the main focus.

Verbal communication allows individuals to express their thoughts, ideas, emotions, and
intentions. It is the primary medium through which meaning is conveyed in human
interaction (Crystal, D. 2001)

Therefore, in this case, the verbal inside the picture deliver message that the missing of Adrien is
complicated and difficult to be disclosed. The reason behind the usage of modes in the last
picture is to give idea to the reader that the Adrien’s case is tragic and complicated due to the
hardships of solving it.
