Marine Chapter 1.1 Notes
Jaela O’Meara

Main Idea: The food and material resources gained from the oceans drove human discoveries
about conditions in the oceans and of the biology of marine organisms.

Key Questions:
1. What do marine scientists’ study?
Everything from the physics of ocean currents to the communication behavior in marine
mammals.

2. How has technology impacted the study of the oceans?

Technology has impacted the study of oceans by enabling advanced underwater exploration, data
collection, and mapping.

Vocab:
 1. Suba- Equipment that allows breathing underwater from tanks of compressed air.
 2. Remote sensing- Collecting data using satellites

Dive in Summary:
Traveling to the bottom of the ocean today is manageable by using manatee submersibles.
Scientists can explore depths of the ocean like never before. Submersibles can hold a number of
people, allowing them to nearly reach 98% of the ocean floor.

Section review questions:

1. The groups of people that brought forth the most contribution of knowledge of the oceans
were the ancient Greeks and Romans; as they had considerable knowledge of nearshore
organisms throughout their region.
2. The contributions made from the HMS challenger included discovering many previously
unknown organisms and realized that sea floor life varies depending on the depth.
3. Remote sensing technology is used by marine scientists to gather data about the oceans.
These devices use satellites that see the surface of the ocean, however most action occurs
further down.
