TUTOR MARKED ASSIGNMENTS
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS
Dear Learner,
By now you must have started studying your Secondary Course of the National Institute of Open Schooling
(NIOS). As you already know, planned and continuous study is necessary for successful completion of a
course. We have developed several means and strategies to help you to learn and be a successful learner.
Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) is one such means.
TMAs will help you to:

 develop regular study habit which is necessary to become a self learner;
 know the subject matter better and to get practice in writing responses to questions thereby having a
kind of rehearsal in the preparation for the final examination;
 receive feedback and confirmation about the correctness of the response provided by you;
 check your progress in studying the subject you had opted for, so that you can find out subject areas
where you have difficulties and need to put in more effort to learn well; and
 maintain contact with the subject teachers at your Accredited Institution (AI) and take appropriate
guidance in your studies.
How to Prepare Answer Script for TMAs?
You will find one assignment in each subject at your Dashboard on the Student portal of NIOS
https://sdmis.nios.ac.in. You are required to complete the assignment in your own handwriting in the chosen
subjects only within the stipulated time. Use one sided lined paper to prepare answer script for TMAs and
submit/upload online through your Dashboard.
The Format of TMA
You will notice that TMA is for 20 marks. Questions 1, 2 and 3, comprise of short answer questions of 2
marks each. Also, each question has two choices of which you have to attempt only one i.e. 2+2+2= 6
marks. Questions 1, 2 and 3 will thus cover 6 marks altogether.
Question number 4 and 5 are long answer questions of 4 marks each. Each Question no. is carrying 2
questions. You have to answer only one question out of the two given. Thus, questions 4 and 5 are for 8
marks (4+4=8).
Question no. 6 gives you two projects of which you have to attempt only one. This question will be for 6
marks. The guidelines for each project work are given along with the topic set.
The submission of TMAs
The schedule for submission of the Secondary Course TMAs through your Dash Board for both admission
blocks are given below:

Please follow this submission schedule strictly to take benefit of TMAs. TMA is applicable only for the
learners admitted through stream–I. TMAs shall be submitted before appearing in the Public
Examination of the particular subject. The Tutor Marked Assignment at Secondary will carry 20%
weightage of theory part in the external examination. These marks will be shown separately in the marks
sheet alongwith the external examination marks.
For every academic year a new set of TMA booklets will be available at your Dash Board on NIOS Website
i.e. www.nios.ac.in. Please remember that you have to submit/upload TMA online through your
Dashboard on the Student Portal of NIOS https://sdmis.nios.ac.in.
The feedback shall be available online on your dashboard. Go through the feedback provided by the TMA
evaluator carefully and use it to improve your performance by:
 Re-reading the lessons in the study materials provided to you in each subject.
 attending PCP classes to clarify doubts from the teacher or solve problems that you face during studies;
and
 Devoting more time for studies.
Looking into the benefits of TMA, it will be possible for you to make best use of it in order to become a
successful learner.
NOTE:
a) TMA shall be available on the student dashboard and also on nios.ac.in for downloading.
b) TMA can be uploaded only from the student dashboard on the student portal of NIOS
https://sdmis.nios.ac.in
c) Only handwritten TMA shall be accepted for assessment. Computer printed TMA will not be accepted
in any case.
d) TMA shall be prepared only in the medium as selected by the learner in the admission.
e) TMA can be submitted/uploaded only once in the entire duration of your admission (max. 5 years)
f) The learner shall prepare a cover page of the TMA mentioning the Student Name, Course, medium,
Subject code and Subject Name and enrollment number.
g) TMA once evaluated can’t be reevaluated. Be very careful while submitting/uploading the TMA
h) TMA must be submitted/ uploaded only through the student dashboard before the due date as
mentioned above and also mentioned in the prospectus or as per the notifications issued by NIOS time
to time.
i) After the due date for submitting/uploading the TMA, late fee (as applicable) shall be paid by the
learners to upload/submit.
j) No additional fee has to be submitted to any study centre for submission/evaluation of TMA

Learning at your doorstep

NIOS is providing various platforms to help you in learning. There are:-
 SWAYAM: SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is one
of it. It is a MOOCs platform (Massive Open Online Courses) launched by Ministry of
Education, Govt. of India. At present NIOS offers MOOCs courses at Secondary and Senior
Secondary Level both. The MOOCs have been developed using the four quadrant approach
– text in PDF, a teaching video, self assessment exercises; and discussion forum. You can
enroll yourself on SWAYAM at www.swayam.gov.in without any fee.

 DIKSHA: DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for School Education) is a unique initiative of
Ministry of Education, Govt. of India where quality education resource material in digital
format can be accessed. NIOS is an active contributor to DIKSHA Portal. Digital Self
Learning Materials of various courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary levels of NIOS
are available on this digital repository. Digital Self Learning Materials of NIOS can be
accessed at https://diksha.gov.in/nios/explore
 PM e-Vidya : PM e-Vidya is another medium of learning. It provides Video Programms
24x7 at Secondary and Sr. Secondary. Live video Personal Contact Programmes are
available on e-Vidya in different subjects. NIOS provide educational programme for
secondary level at channel 17 and Sr. Secondary Programme at channel 18 of PM e-vidya.
Channel No. 19 has alos been started for Indian Sign Language, Open Basic Education and
Bhartiya Jnana Parampara Courses. Through this initiative, you can learn anywhere
especially in far flung areas who do not have access to internet. You can also watch these
programmes on You Tube channel of NIOS.
 Mukta Vidya Vani : Mukta Vidya Vani Appreciating your need for more support NIOS
also brings the magic of technology to your door step!! "Mukta Vidya Vani" our web based
live PCPs supplement and complement the Self Learning Materials. It gives you an
opportunity to interact with the experts of your subjects. You can clear your queries and

4626949. The time schedule of the live programmes is given below for reference. If due to
any reason you miss the live PCPs you can hear the recorded versions in repeat cycle or at

Make two cylindrical card board formers of diameter 1 inch and 2 inch and length 6inch closely
wound coils using insulated copper wire taking out of tapping’s after 50 turns, 100 turns, 250
turns on each format. Now place a magnate needle at appropriate distance.
Take first coil. Connect its 50 turns across a battery and note the deflection of magnetic needle.
Repeat observations with 100 turns, 200 turns etc.
Make similar observations using the second coil.
