9:

SCIENTISTS MUST MEASURE

Short question/Answers

Question No. 1: How many millimeters are there in

i. 1 cm
ii. 4cm
iii. 0.5 cm , 6.7 cm, 1 m?

Answer:

There are

i) 10 millimetres in 1 cm;
ii) ii) 40 mm in 4 cm;
iii) 5 mm in 0.5 cm, 67 mm in 6.7 cm, and 1000 mm in 1 m.

Question No. 2: A piece of cork has a mass of 10g. what is the volume? (see
the table on page 104 for the density)

Answer:

Cork has a density of 0.25g/ cm3

Mass of cork = 10 g

Density = mass / volume

Volume = mass/ density = 10/ 0.25 = 40 cm3

Question No. 3: what will happen if a piece of material with a density higher
than that of water is placed in water ? what will happen if a piece of material
with a density lower than that of water is placed in water?

Answer: A piece of a material with a density higher than that of

water will sink when it is placed in water. A piece of a material
with a density less than that of water will float in water

Question No. 4: A car travelled 150 Km and used 10 liters of patrol . what
was its rate of patrol consumption?

Answer:

The car’s rate of petrol consumption is 150/ 10 = 15 km/ I

Question No. 5: A family of four used 180 m3 of water in a week. What is the
family’s rate of water use in a day

Answer:

The family’s rate of water use is 180 m3 / 7 = 25.71 m3

in a day
(7 is the days in week)

Detailed Questions/Answer

Question No. 1: Farmers measures area in hectares (ha). 1 ha = 10,000 m3

i. What is the area in hectares of a square field 100 x 100 m?

ii. If each cow needs 20 m2, how many cows can be kept on a 2 ha field?

Answer:

i) area of field = 100 x 100 m = 10,000 m2 = 1 ha

ii) area of 2 ha field = 20 000 m2
Number of cows = 20 000 m2 / 20 m2 = 1000
Question No. 2: If the density of a certain kind of wood in 0.5g/cm3, what is
the mass of

i. 1 cm3,
ii. 2 cm3,
iii. 10 cm3,

Answer:

Density = mass / volume and mass = density ×

volume

mass of

i). 1 cm3 = 0.5 × 1 cm = 0.5g cm3

ii) 2 cm3 = 0.5 × 2 cm = 1.0 g / cm3

iii) 10 cm3 = 0.5 × 10 cm = 5.0g / cm3
