12.2 Exemption of Replacement Standards

Wire/ropes shall be replaced whenever the follo\ving conditions are observed:

• The number of parted strands exceeds the percentages below for all
outside strands.
o 10% parted strands in one (1) twist
o 20% parted strands in five (5) twists
• The decrease in diameter exceeds 7% of the original due to wear and tear.
• The wire surface is pockmarked due to corrosion of the inside core.
• The following conditions are observed by visual checks:
o Kinks appear or a strand conspicuously twists and becomes loose
o Minimum diameter decreases to two-thirds (2/3) of the maximum
diameter
o The core sticks out or a sticking bend appears.

12.3 Test and Maintenance of Mooring Winch Brake

The Chief officer is responsible for brake rendering test of winches under the
guidance of Chief Engineer. Any abnormalities to be reported to the company
immediately.

Brake Rendering Teat Guidelines:

(Refer to mooring equipment guidelines (MEG 4) for more details)

All mooring winches brakes must be set to render at 60% of the Ship Design
MBL (SDMBL) on the first layer and ensure follo, ving:
• Follo,v manufacturers guidelines given in the mooring winch manual.
• Ensure correct hydraulic jack pressure is applied.
• Record test results and ensure markings on the drum are correct & visible.
• Ensure permanent marking on the brake handle at the rendering point.
• Ali crew members to be aware of the marking on the brake handle and
must not tighten the brake beyond the set marking.

Testing on the first layer i s possible only on winches fitted ,vith split drum
(Divided drum) arrangement. For winches ,vithout split drum (Undivided
drums) an allo, vance must be made, the drum diameter ,vill increase by the
diameter of number of layers of rope on the drum during use.
Note: For ships ,vithout split drum (Undivided drum) use 2 times the line
diameter for calculation purpose.

Ship design MBL (SDMBL), if not mentioned may be found from one of the the
following locations:
• Shjp's design MBL or Equipment Number as stated in Ship's Mooring Plan
or any other dra,ving.
• MBL of the original mooring lines mentioned in the Mooring Arrangement
Plan.

Brake rendering test must be carried out at least on follo\ving occasions:

• Before ship's delivery.
• After completion of any modification or maintenance (Rene\val of brake
lining, Renewal of mooring lines etc.).
• Where there is evidence of premature brake slippage or related
malfunction.
• According to manufacturer's testing frequency or once every 2.5 Years,
whichever comes first.
• Annually if required by any interested parties.

Brake Lining
• The Chief Officer shall check condition and thickness of all brake linings.
• Brake linings shall be replaced if:
o The thickness of any part of the lining is reduced to less than 40%
of the original; (Thickness should be measure on 3 points in each
brake lining Both ends and center) 4
o Linings are partially lost;

berth.
o Cover all mooring ropes and wires \vith a canvas when in storage.
o Coat all mooring wires with the non-polluting wire rope grease
designated b y the company.
o Interval of overall greasing: At least twice per year.

completion of inspection.

12.5 Spare Wire, Ropes and Shackles

The vessel shall maintain the following number of spare mooring ropes, wires
and shackles on board as minimum. This is apart from those in use.
• Mooring Wire 2 coils
• Mooring Tail 2 nos.
• Mooring Hawser 2 coils
• Mooring Shackle 2 pieces

12.6 Check & Adjustment of The Windlass Brake at Dry Dock

• Open the brakes and check the moving parts.

• Check to see if the brake lining is damaged and measure the thinnest
point of the lining. If i t is five (5) mm or less, \vhich is only half the
effective thickness (excluding S-6mm to the head of screw for firing the
brake lining, then replace the whole lining with a new one.
• Adjust until effective brake pressure is recovered if any trouble is found
in the brake linkage,
• Watch the vertical range of the brake leverage piston and mark and
record the normal position on vessels with oil pressure brakes,
• Check the working condition of the manual brakes and adjust the
relevant moving parts.
• Implement upkeep of the brake drum.
