Research title: Domestic violence on the rise amid the Covid 19 pandemic.
I. INTRODUCTION
The Corona virus (Covid 19) is causing a long-term crisis that is causing rapid changes in
people's lives: adults are losing their jobs or working from home, children are switching to online
learning, and face-to-face interactions with strangers are restricted, if not prohibited, increasing
the risk of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and stress. The epidemic not only
affects each individual's psychology, but it can also affect intimate family relationships such as
husband and wife, parents and children. In other words, the epidemic affects not only people's
lives but also their psychology, leading to an increase in domestic violence (VOV, 2021).
Domestic violence is a type of social violence defined as "an intentional act or threat of harm by
family members to other family members." (Article 1, Law. Domestic violence prevention and
control in 2007). Associate Professor Ph.D Bui Thi Hong Thai demonstrates that the Covid-19
pandemic is having a direct impact on family relationships in both positive and negative
directions, with negative effects such as both parents and children experiencing a sense of loss of
privacy due to the constant presence of other family members (VOV, 2021). A number of recent
studies show that domestic violence is primarily a concern for women and children worldwide,
and Vietnam is no exception. However, the women who did not seek help from any agency may
have done so due to a lack of available services or a fear of stigma and discrimination. Violence
against children is widespread not only in Ho Chi Minh City, but worldwide. Domestic violence
discipline or child sexual abuse cases involving children aged 1 to 14 are reported every year.
However, this is only the tip of the iceberg, hiding a much more complex and violent reality
(Kitahara, 2020).
Furthermore, related studies on domestic violence during a serious epidemic situation are
limited in terms of research because this is a rather sensitive issue in each family, so the report
will concentrate on sharing experiences from people who have experienced or witnessed scenes
of domestic violence, then collecting data and analyzing the data to recommend the best
measures to prevent domestic violence. Gain knowledge and analyze how the state supports and
intervenes to eliminate domestic violence, particularly against women and children, in Vietnam
in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular in the emergency context of the Covid 19
pandemic.
1. Research Objective
To determine the causes and consequences of domestic violence in Ho Chi Minh City
during the pandemic
iv
To identify how families could revolve domestic violence during the pandemic
To discuss how domestic violence can be controlled.
2. Research Question
o What are the causes and consequences of domestic violence during the pandemic?
o How can families reduce the conflict that leads to domestic violence during a serious
epidemic?
o What is the best way to control domestic violence prevention?
II. LITERATURE REVIEW
1. Causes of domestic violence during the epidemic
Peace is more than the absence of war. Many members are facing violence in areas that have
been locked down and isolated due to the Covid-19 epidemic, where what should have been the
safest place in their home has become the scariest place in their house. Domestic violence has
many causes and manifests itself in all areas. The majority of those killed are women and
children. Psychological stress and anxiety caused by illness and disasters, as well as many people
losing their jobs and economic concerns, have sparked debate and increased the risk of domestic
violence. They were subjected to sexual abuse, physical abuse, and a variety of other forms of
mental torture (giadinh, 2022). Associate Professor Ph.D Bui Thi Hong Thai pointed out that
even if there are no economic problems, husband and wife may have conflicts in sharing family
responsibilities, even in accepting the habits of the other party who spends little time together.
Parents may experience a disconnect between caring for their children, their children's
schoolwork, and their own work. Many parents may also struggle with managing their own and
their children's emotions, placing too many expectations on their children but finding them
unable to meet those expectations, posing a mental and physical risk of domestic violence (VOV,
2021). On the other hand, the problem is particularly severe in families with a history of
violence; frequently, men seek to maintain control over the person living with them, and in the
context of being unable to move, their control will grow. These factors have increased the risk of
violence against women in the family (Nguyen, 2020).
2. Consequences of domestic violence
Firstly, victims of violence suffer physical and mental health consequences. In particular, women
bear the brunt of sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancies, and other such
calamities. Because physical or sexual abuse inevitably results in health problems, painful
injuries, lifelong disability, and even death. Domestic violence also causes mental trauma,
victims are constantly depressed, anxious, afraid, and depressed, as well as heavy and hopeless
in life (Startup, 2020). Second, family violence against children has a direct impact on children's

v
physical and intellectual development. As the number of reported cases of child abuse rises,
children will experience stress, fear of harm, negative psychology, a lack of concentration and an
inability to play actively, as well as avoid relationships with peers. age, tends to be closed to
everyone around them. However, many children enjoy causing trouble by dropping out of
school, committing crimes, abusing alcohol, smoking, and drugs, and imitating the behavior of
adults who abuse others. There are also serious issues such as depression and suicidal ideation or
action (Startup, 2020). On the other hand, violence strains and fractures family relationships,
leading to an increase in divorces. Furthermore, violent incidents have an impact on society's
security and order, as well as the country's economy. Domestic violence affects both victims and
perpetrators, reducing their contribution to society and creating a future workforce with poor
physical and mental health, a lack of creativity, a lack of creativity, and a lack of creativity
proactiveness (Startup, 2020).
3. Families could revolve domestic violence during the pandemic
Although it is difficult financially in the context of the Covid 19 pandemic, it is also a time that
allows each family and individual to live more slowly and enjoy life, thus helping to improve the
quality of life and family relationships. Because of the Covid pandemic, it is extremely difficult
to travel, even leave the house, and have little interaction with the outside world, providing
couples and parents with the opportunity to reflect and re-evaluate their lives. Prioritizing life
after work can encourage caring, affection, and sharing common responsibilities with family
members. As a result, during this trying time, each family member should develop new healthy
and supportive habits such as working together, reading together, sharing household chores, and
parenting. Children collaborate and study together. Each person can develop a positive attitude
toward his wife, husband, and children in order to overcome psychological pressures in the
context of the epidemic (VOV, 2021). For example, husband and wife accept each other's
differences, go along with each other, share rather than try to change each other, forgive and talk
directly about the partner's unwanted behavior rather than trying to change each other. Parents
communicate with their children in a respectful and united manner, rather than criticizing and
attributing it to their nature (VOV, 2021).
4. Equipping skills to prevent domestic violence in the context of COVID-19
Vietnam Family Day June 28 this year has the theme "Peaceful family - happy society", through
messages such as: "Let love warm your home"; "Happiness will radiate light in the family
without violence.” These messages about family happiness are set in the context of the
complicated development of the COVID-19 epidemic, which has a strong impact on every
family in addition to the effects on production and business. The loss of a job, economic

vi
hardship, or problems caused by parent-child behavior can all lead to increased vulnerability to
domestic violence. Since the early days of COVID in Vietnam, the Center for Research and
Applied Science on Gender - Family - Women and Adolescents (CSAGA) has implemented a
program to prevent gender violence in the context of COVID-19. This is a difficult time for
families. Parents lose their jobs, children face financial stress, and they must study online or
spend a lot of time together, but domestic violence, in particular, and gender violence in general,
is on the rise. This is true both in Vietnam and throughout the world. Ms. Nguyen Van Anh,
President of the Center for Research and Applied Science on Gender, Family, Women, and
Adolescents (CSAGA), stated that calls about gender-based violence are increasing during this
time. There are twice as many cases as before, and they are more serious in nature (TTXVN,
2021). Ms. Nguyen Van Anh stated that violent incidents frequently occur in high-class
apartments, so CSAGA placed hotline ads in a series of high-class apartments with that is the
manual to be able to support the victim the most, as well as the center also increases the hotline
time during the day (TTXVN, 2021). Experts advise parents to listen to their children in order to
reduce domestic violence in the current context. Parents, please take the time to respect and
listen to your children from a young age. Because each child is unique, there is no single formula
for raising children; however, the general principles are to take time, respect, and listen to
children. Ms. Nguyen Phuong Linh emphasized that children must learn to grow up, and that
parents must also learn positive educational methods in order to be the driving force, creating
conditions for their children to develop holistically and maximize their potential. Furthermore,
state agencies have policies and programs in place to assist families in finding a common voice
and protecting families and children in the face of the epidemic (TTXVN, 2021).
III. PLANNED METHODOLOGY
1. Research philosophy
A research philosophy is a set of beliefs about how to collect, analyze, and apply data about a
phenomenon. The various philosophies of research approach are referred to as epistemology
(what is known to be true) as opposed to doxology (what is believed to be true). The goal of
science is thus to transform what is believed into what is known: doxa to episteme. In the
Western scientific tradition, two major research philosophies have been identified, namely
positivist (also known as scientific) and interpretivist (also known as antipositivist) (Galliers,
1991).
o Positivism
Positivists believe that reality is stable and that it can be observed and described objectively
(Levin, 1988), that is, without interfering with the phenomena being studied. They argue that

vii
phenomena must be isolated and observations must be repeatable. This frequently entails
manipulating reality with variations in only one independent variable in order to identify
regularities in, and form relationships between, some of the constituent elements of the social
world.
o Interpretivism
According to interpretivists, reality can only be fully understood through subjective
interpretation and intervention. The study of phenomena in their natural environment is central to
interpretivist philosophy, as is the recognition that scientists cannot avoid having an impact on
the phenomena they study. They acknowledge that there may be many interpretations of reality,
but they insist that these interpretations are part of the scientific knowledge they seek.
Interpretivism has a tradition that is neither less glorious nor shorter than that of positivism.
2. Research nature
Nature study as a process entails seeing what one looks at and drawing the correct conclusions
from what one sees. Its goal is to teach the child about his surroundings so that his life will be
fuller and richer in the end. The study of nature is not the same as the study of science, such as
botany, entomology, geology, and so on. It is simply taking what is in front of you and
attempting to comprehend it without primarily referring to the systematic order or relationships
of the objects. It is casual, as are the objects that one sees. It is distinct from mere definitions or
formal explanations in books. As a result, it is entirely natural. It trains the eyes and mind to see
and understand everyday things (Wikipedia, 2022). Nature study begins with a walk in the
woods. This is a time to get outside and explore the world around you. When walking down the
street, point out the focus of the research paper. The researcher can ask any question and find the
answer by collecting samples and analyzing them. The natural journal is the second component.
During the researcher's journey, he or she should sit down and write about his or her experience,
or wait until they get home to add an entry to their nature diary. In either case, the journal should
be a personal record of the researcher's observations and data collection. Nature walks and nature
journals complement each other to show researchers the wonders of science in their
surroundings. When used in tandem, they create a comprehensive study of nature that can be a
particularly effective tool for science education (EB, 2022).
3. Research design
The research method used in this article is quantitative. Because Quantitative research is a
method of collecting information and data in the form of arithmetic and statistical data in order
to obtain basic and general information about the research object for statistical purposes and
analysis; in other words, faster data analysis and collection. First, quantitative data can be

viii
analyzed statistically, and because statistics are based on mathematical principles, the
quantitative method is regarded as the scientific and rational method. As a result, quantitative
research is ideal for testing proposed hypotheses (Stawell, 2019). Second, the high reliability and
representativeness of the research results allow quantitative research findings to be generalized
to the sample population (Stawell, 2019). To sum up, quantitative research is objective; it allows
researchers to collect the same data from a large number of people and obtain the best results;
thus, choosing one quantitative method over another is due to quantitative research having many
advantages and few limitations.
4. Sampling
Collect samples in Ho Chi Minh City
Survey subjects: mainly women and children
The study's sampling campaign was based on convenience. Because researchers can choose
which elements to access. In other words, this type of sampling is based on the survey subjects'
ease of access. The author will conduct direct interviews with some subjects who have been
victims of domestic violence or who have witnessed domestic violence. Furthermore, because
this is a sensitive research title, a face-to-face interview will produce little data, so the author
used the Google Form tool to conduct a survey on the websites and attracted 30 participants.
5. Data collection
The following are the data collection steps:
Step 1: Determine the research goal.
Step 2: Select a data collection technique.
Step 3: Create a plan for data collection.
Step 4: Gather data.
Collect data through a direct survey of a large number of people who have experienced or
witnessed domestic violence. More importantly, use the Google Forms tool to collect data. The
majority of those present were married women or children who were aware of the issue.

Verbal and physical violence

According to the actual survey, during the Covid 19 epidemic season, the rate of domestic
violence in Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular was at an all-time high.
Because the increase in the unemployment rate during the Covid 19 period complicates
economic life. Each family's financial situation becomes more difficult. As a result, controversies
erupted and grew, resulting in verbal or physical violence, and victims of violence, particularly
women and children, became increasingly anxious and insecure.

According to the graph, learning to listen and respect one another accounts for 30% of the
family's solution to reducing domestic violence in the context of the Covid 19 epidemic. When
there is a conflict, it is difficult for anyone to remain calm; most people will say hurtful things to
each other, but when the matter is resolved, family members should look back rather than being
stubborn with their opinions. Respect and listening Furthermore, each family chooses to openly
express their wishes; approximately 45% of them do so to avoid conflict. The simplest way for
people to understand what family members want and how to change to better fit each other is to
express themselves. Furthermore, each family member must constantly improve himself and put
himself in the position of the other in order to better understand each other, resulting in conflict
and domestic violence.

According to the survey, the best way to reduce domestic violence is to spread awareness and set
up numerous support centers for victims of domestic violence. Furthermore, victims are given
psychological and medical assistance.

7. Research limitation
The research process has numerous limitations. First, there was a time constraint, as this study
only had 23 days to complete the study from November 8 to December 20. Second, because this
research topic is quite sensitive, going directly to the survey will be difficult; some people are
afraid to share their family stories, limiting information and data. As a result, the author must
collect additional data for the research paper using the Google Form tool.
8. Ethical consideration
Ethical considerations in research are a set of principles that guide the design and
implementation of research projects. When collecting data from people, scientists and
researchers must always follow a strict code of conduct. Understanding real-world phenomena,
studying effective treatments, investigating behaviors, and improving people's lives are all
common goals of human research. What the researcher decides to investigate and how the
researcher conducts the investigation are both important ethical considerations (Bhandari, 2022).
These considerations work to
o protect the rights of research participants
o enhance research validity
o maintain scientific integrity
