A. PREPERATION

1. Purpose of experiment:
 Be able demonstrate the technnical principles of distillation, distinguish
between simple distillation and fractional distillation.
 Apply simple distillation and fractional distillation technique to separate
a mixture of different liquids.
 Be able to plot temperature versus volume plot in distillation technique.
 Compare results when distillating the same mixture using two different
distillation technique.
2. Chemical properties and safety

Compound Structure MW mp (oC) bp density safety

(g/mol) (oC) (g/cm3)
Ethanol 46.07 -114.1 78.37 0.789

Water 18.01 0 100 0.997

3. Experimental procedure

a) Simple distillation
 Take 50 mL of ethanol and 50 mL of distilled water into a 250 mL
pitcher;
 Add 2 pumice stones to the pitcher;
 Install a simple distillation system known in the theoretical part, open
the circulating water system;
 Carry out heating slowly so that the boiling liquid begins to boil.
Maintain the boiling process of the liquid. Monitor the thermometer,
record the temperature when the first drop of liquid is caught in the
measuring tube (liquid receiving tube), at this time it is necessary to
adjust the stove to reach the desired distillation speed (10 drops per
minute);
 Start recording the distillation temperature as a function according to
the volume of liquid obtained 5 mL records temperature once;
 Distillation until there is about 20 mL of liquid left in the sphere, then
stop distilling, turn off the heat;
 Build a temperature-volume graph. Interpret the results.
b) Fractional distillation
 Take 50 mL of ethanol and 50 mL of distilled water into a 250 mL
pitcher;
 Add 2 pumice stones to the pitcher;
 Install a simple distillation system known in the theoretical part, open
the circulating water system;
 Carry out heating slowly so that the boiling liquid begins to boil.
Maintain the boiling process of the liquid. Monitor the thermometer,
record the temperature when the first drop of liquid is caught in the
measuring tube (liquid receiving tube), at this time it is necessary to
adjust the stove to reach the desired distillation speed (1 drop/2-3
seconds);
 Start recording the distillation temperature as a function according to
the volume of liquid obtained. 5 mL records temperature once;
 Distillation until there is about 20 mL of liquid left in the sphere, then
stop distilling, turn off the heat;
 Build a temperature-volume graph. Interpret the results.
