Instructions: In this activity, you will identify a community problem that needs investigation. Then you will
explain how political, social, and economic concerns can limit scientific solutions to a conservation issue.
Lastly, you will explain how a scientific solution can impact people politically, socially, and economically.

Part 1: What is a political, social, and economic issue?

Use what you learned in the lesson to match each term with its definition. Place the letter that matches each
term in the purple boxes.

SOCIAL ISSUES A. Issues related to the production, consumption, and transfer of

money.

ECONOMIC ISSUES B. Issues related to agencies, groups, or the government.

POLITICAL ISSUES C. Issues related to large numbers of people within a community.

Part 2: What's the problem?

Read the story below and identify the conservation issue. Place your answer in the purple box.

The neighborhood of Forest Estates has 100 homes and multiple neighborhood parks. Between the homes,
there are sections of dense forest that provide natural barriers and shade. These forests also provide natural
flood protection by collecting water that would otherwise flood the streets or go into people's homes. After it
rains, the water recedes quickly. During storms with high winds, some pine trees fall onto people's homes.

What is the community problem of Forest Estates? Place the letter that matches the correct answer in the
purple box.

C. There is flooding after every rain storm.
Part 3: Finding a Solution

economic, and social issues impacting their ability to find a solution. Can you match each issue with its type

between homes by the builder of the neighborhood.

POLITICAL ISSUES C. Flooding can cause damage to homes that are expensive to fix.
