Press Release – For Immediate release
March 28, 2024, 12:00 P.M.

Box Elder, Mont.

Hill County Sheriff Jamie Ross announced this morning;
At about 1:30 A.M. this morning Hill County Deputies were dispatched to a shots fired call in the parking lot of
the D&L Bar in Box Elder. The first deputies on the scene discovered two men had been shot at the gas pumps
at the D&L. Both were transported in private vehicles. The ambulance met one of the vehicles in Laredo. The
other vehicle was intercepted by Tribal Police who rendered aid and transferred him to an ambulance. Both
men, were residents of the Rocky Boy Reservation and died at the hospital. The Sheriff identified the two men
as Darin Bernard Caplette age 41 and Thomas Roderick Yallup age 42.
Hill County Deputy Sheriffs are being assisted by Cascade County Sheriff’s Detectives, Tribal Police, Chouteau
County Deputies and the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation are actively investigating this crime.
Sheriff Ross said “The initial information indicates that this was a targeted assault directed at these two men and
we don’t have any evidence currently that would indicate a risk to the public at large. Expect to see a large law
enforcement presence in the Box Elder area for a considerable time. We have many crime scenes to process
and witness to interview.” Because this is a homicide investigation the bodies will be sent to the Montana State
Crime Lab for autopsy. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call 406-265-2512.
Sheriff Ross wants to thank the community for understanding that investigators must rely on facts and evidence
not rumor which takes more time and effort.
