1. Starting the computer


1.1. Check peripheral devices
 Windows XP provides computers with the ability to connect to peripheral devices, such
as mouse, keyboard, printers.
 Check peripheral devices Connect or plagued properly.
1. Keyboard
2. Mouse
3. Monitor
4. Power Cable
5. And other device.
1.2. Turn on the computer
 After checking peripheral devices to turn on your computer using On/off Switch Button
from the front of System unit.

1.3. Turn of the Computer
 While working with Windows, there are many system and data files open.
You should never physically turn your computer off without first allowing
Windows to update, save and close all of the necessary system files.

Follow the steps outlined below to shut down Windows:

Click on this button (located on the taskbar). The following pop-up


menu appears:

 Select from the menu. The following box will be displayed:

This option places your computer in a low-power mode when it is idle but
remains available for immediate use. This is typically used for laptops and
portable devices, but can also conserve power with desktop systems. Be sure to

save your work before going into standby mode as your data is not saved to disk if
the power fails while in this mode. All information within the computer’s
memory will be lost.

Saves any changes to Windows settings and writes any unsaved data to the hard
drive before turning off your computer system.

Saves any recent changes to Windows settings and writes any unsaved data to the
hard drive. It, then, restarts the computer. Use this option if your system seems
to be bogged down or having problems.

 Select one of the three options.

1.4 Log off Computer


1. Click on this button (located on the taskbar). The following pop-up menu
appears:

This item is used to switch off from the current user and allows you to log back on
using account. (Windows Button + L key)

This item is used to Log off from the current user and allows you to log back on
using account.

2. Access System information


 System Information collects system information, such as devices that are
installed in your computer, or device drivers that are loaded in your
computer, and provides a menu for displaying the associated system
topics.
 System Information also provides access to tools you can use for
troubleshooting your computer.
To start Microsoft System Information, use either of the following methods:
 Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System
Tools, and then click System Information.
OR
 Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32.exe in the Open box, and then
click OK.
The information that is displayed in System Information is divided into the
following five categories:

 Hardware Resources
 Components
 Software Environment
 Applications
 Internet Explorer

3.1 Desktop Elements

3.1.1 Icon
 The icon itself is a small picture or symbol serving as a quick, intuitive
representation of a software tool, function or a data file accessible on the
system.
 My Computer: used to access all hard disk drives and removable
device connected to your computer.

 My Document: a place used to store all your files.

 Recycle bin: used to store deleted files or folder and allow you to
retrieve them.

 My Network place: Display all shared recourse connected to your


computer by a network.

 Internet Explorer: used to access internet or webs.

3.1.2 Start button:


 Used to access all programs that are installed to the computer.

3.1.3 Task Bar:


 The task bar display opened files, folders and programs.
 When multiple windows are open, you can switch programs or file and also
you can arrange a programs.

3.2 customize desktop icon

1. First, right click on your desktop and select property.

2. Click on Desktop tab

4. Folder/ directory manipulation
 In graphical user interfaces such as Windows and the Macintosh
environment, a folder is an object that can contain multiple documents.
Folders are used to organize information. In the DOS and UNIX worlds,
folders are called directories.

Title Bar: it is collard bar used to show opened program and it holds control
menus.
Menu Bar: It contains different menus like File, Edit, View and etc. Each of
these menus contains commands. For example the edit menu contains
commands like Copy, Cut and Paste. Commands are instruction we use while
we work in certain applications.
Standard Toolbar: This is a bar, which is found at the bottom of the windows.
It basically displays information about the windows and objects inside the
windows.
Address Bar: This is a bar which allows you to change drives or folders.
Toolbar: It contains button of frequently used commands. When we place the
mouse pointer on the button command a tool-tip appears which displays the
name of the command.
Scroll bars: These bars enable the user to navigate inside the working area of
the windows. There are two types of scroll bars. The Vertical scroll bar and
the Horizontal scroll bar. The Vertical scroll bar is used to navigate vertically
where as the Horizontal scroll bar is used to navigate horizontally.

Control menu: It contains control menu, the name of the windows, the
minimize, maximize/restore and close buttons. We can move windows on
the desktop by dragging its title bar.

4.2. Windows Explorer


 Windows explorer used to manage file and folders.
 Crate folder
 Delete folders and files
 Rename folders and files
 Move and copy folders and files

4.1.3. Windows Explorer contents


 The tree pan (left pane) in the explorer screen above shows the content of the
computer as the highest level in the tree. Some of these components have a plus
sign (+) in front of them to indicate that there is deeper level of components
underneath.
 The Content pan (Right pane) in the explorer screen above shows the content of
folders and drives.

4.3.Creating a New Folder or directors.


To create new folder:
1. Select the location (drive, folder, or desktop) in which you want to create your
new folder
2. Select File from menu barNewFolder
3. Write the name of folders
4. Enter key.

4.4. Remaining a Folder or file


To rename a Folder or file
1. Select the folder or file that you wish to rename.
2. Type the new name of the folder or files.
3. Enter key.

4.5. Deleting a Folder or file


 They are two types of delete the first one is permanent delete and temporary
delete.
 Temporary delete remove temporarily file or folder form the computer and stored
on Recycle bin.
 Permanent delete remove folder or files from the computer.

To Delete a Folder or file temporarily


1. Select the folder or file that you wish to delete.
2. Select File from menu bar Delete
Or
1. Select the folder or file that you wish to delete.
2. Delete key from your keyboard

To restore deleted folder or files


1. Open Recycle bin form your desktop
2. Select your file or folder
3. Select File form menu barRestore.

To Delete a Folder or file permanently


1. Select the folder or file that you wish to delete.
2. Press Shift key forms the keyboard.
3. Select File from menu bar Delete
Or
1. Select the folder or file that you wish to delete.
2. Press shift key and Delete key from your keyboard

4.6. Copy and move directory

4.6.1. Copy folder or files


 Copying files and folder is useful if you want to copy(duplicate) a file or
folder, and place it in another location.
To copy folder or files
1. Select the folder or file that you wish to copy
2. Select Edit menu form menu bar Copy
3. Select the new location
4. Select Edit menupast

4.6.2. Move folder or files


 Moving a file or folders is useful if you want to move file or folder to another
location.
To move folder or files
1. Select the folder or file that you wish to move
2. Select Edit menu form menu bar Cut
3. Select the new location

5.1. Windows Accessories
 Windows contains different application like word pad, not pad, ms-paint.

5.1.1 Word pad

 Microsoft word pad for Windows XP is actually a simple word processing


program designed to allow for creating, storing, reading, and editing simple
documents.

5.1.2. To Start Word pad and save file


To start word pad
Click Start buttonall program  AccessoriesSelect Word pad.

To save word pad files


Click on File menuSave asselect the location of filesave button.

5.1.2 Ms Paint

 Ms Paint used to create simple graphics creation and editing program.

 Tool box: displays available tools for drawing like file, selector and etc.
 Colure pallet: displays palette of available drawing colours.
 Drawing Area: displays picture being drawn/edited.
 Status bar: it display basic information of the windows.

6. Crating User account


 You can create separate accounts for each person that will be using the
computer. This allows each user to have their own document folders and
settings such as the wallpaper, Start menu, visual style, and so forth. You

can create and configure user accounts with the User Accounts tool in
Control Panel.

To crate user Account


Click on Start menuControl panelUser accountCrate new account Type the new
Account NextSelect account type Crate account.

To set password.
Click on Start menuControl panelUser accountSelect user account select create
password options type new password two timesCrate password.

To delete user account.


Click on Start menuControl panelUser accountSelect user account select Delete user

7. Changing Background of desktop:


 This panel is used to change the appearance of the background of the
desktop.

To change Background of desktop


1. Right click on the Desktop
2. Select Desktop tab

3. Choose one of them from background options.

4. Then ApplyOk.

8. Changing Screen sever:

Saver panels enable you to choose your screen saver and option such as delay,
password, colons, etc.

To change Screen severs:


1. Right click on the Desktop
2. Select screen sever tab

3. Choose one of them from screen sever options.


4. Then ApplyOk.
