It refers to the inability of an individual to weigh the consequences of immediate and future events
and, consequently, delay gratification (Bechara, Damasio, Damasio and Anderson, 1994).
Furthermore, according to Jabeen Begum, MD (2023), impulsivity is considered as the tendency of a
person to act without thinking. For instance, our tendency to say something we should not talk about,
purchase an item we do not really have any use for, or run across the street without checking each
side if there are approaching vehicles that could pose a threat to our safety (Jabeen Begum, MD,
2023).
Additionally, cognitive impulsivity includes having issues with the several angles of the mental state
of an individual. These issues include having trouble with their habits of attention, ways of taking
action, planning skills, self-control, ability to be consistent, how their brain processes, and their ways
of rationalizing and making decisions (Dr. Sheri Jacobson, 2020)

The Impulsivity of an individual can be measured through the use of a standardized test called
“Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (Revised)” which consists of 30-items that solely focus on the
evaluation of the level of impulsiveness.
