FORM SIX SELF-LEARNING ASSESSMENT 5 on OSCILLATION
Time allowed: 20 minutes
1. A particle is performing oscillation. State TWO necessary conditions about the acceleration of the particle
that the oscillation can be regarded as simple harmonic. (2 marks)

2. A particle of mass 0.1 kg is executing simple harmonic oscillation along a straight line with amplitude 1 m
and period T =  s as shown in Figure 2.

(a) Find the angular frequency  of the motion in s-1. (1 mark)

(b) Complete the following table to show the speed and acceleration of the particle at A and O. Show your
calculation. (5 marks)

(c) Find the time, in terms of , required for the particle to move from A to M, which is the mid-point
between O and A. (2 marks)

3. Figure 3.1 shows a single mass-spring system consisting of a light spring of spring constant 4 N m -1 and
mass 2 kg.

(a) The mass is initially pushed towards the right to 1 cm and then released.
(i) Calculate the period of the oscillation. (2 marks)

(ii) How does the period T change if (4 marks)

(I) the mass increases.

(II) the spring is initially stretched to a greater extent.

(III) a stiffer spring is used.

(IV) a heavier spring is used.
