7.1 Summary of Protected Areas in the Philippines

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park

● Located in the Sulu Sea, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is a UNESCO World Heritage

Site known for its diverse marine life and pristine coral reefs.

● It serves as a protected area to conserve critically endangered marine species such as sea

turtles, sharks, and over 350 species of coral.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park

● Home to the Puerto Princesa Underground River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and

one of the New7Wonders of Nature.

● The park protects a diverse range of ecosystems, including limestone karst landscapes,

tropical rainforests, and a unique underground river system.

Mount Apo Natural Park

● Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, is located within this protected area in

Mindanao.

● It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key biodiversity area, harboring

endemic species of flora and fauna.

Chocolate Hills

● Located in Bohol Province, the Chocolate Hills are a geological formation consisting of

thousands of cone-shaped hills.

Mimbilisan Protected Landscape

Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park

including endemic species such as the Philippine eagle and the tarsier.

hotspot in Mindanao.

Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary
