Instructions:

● The following test contains 3 pages (including this cover page).

● This test is worth 15% of your final grade.

● Clearly label which question and part you are attempting. You may answer the questions in any
order. The questions do not have equal weight; budget your time accordingly.

● You are permitted to use a non-programmable scientific calculator, ruler, pens or pencils, any
papers handed out with this test and 1 double-sided hand-written 3” by 5” reference sheet. All
other personal items must be placed along the front or side of the room.

● Provide 3 significant figures in your numerical answers. Remember to include units.

● Show enough work to prove to the marker that you understand the physics ideas and can apply
them.

● If you draw a box around every final answer, you will be granted 1 bonus mark.

● Good luck.

QUESTION 1 [11 pts]
Two electrons are fixed 2.0 cm apart. Another electron is shot from infinity and stops midway between
the two. What is its initial speed? Be sure to draw a sketch of the initial and final configurations.

QUESTION 2 [5 pts]
Four particles are fixed along an x axis, separated by distances d =2.00 cm as shown. The charges are
q 1=+2e , q 2=−e , q 3=+e , and q 4=+4e . What is the net electrostatic force on particle 2
due to the other particles?

QUESTION 3 [10 pts]

The figure shows a series of equipotential curves.
a) Is the electric field strength at point A larger, smaller, or equal to the field strength at point B?
Briefly explain. [2]
b) Is the electric field strength at point C larger, smaller, or equal to the field strength at point D?
Briefly explain. [2]
c) Draw a field line passing through point B. Be sure to extend your field line through all 5
equipotential curves and clearly indicate the direction of the field. [2]
d) From the information in the figure, determine the electric field ⃗ E D at point D. [4]

QUESTION 4 [15 pts]
An electron is shot at an initial speed of v 0=2.00×10 6 m/s , at
an angle θ0 =40.0o clockwise from the y axis. It moves
through a uniform electric field ⃗ E =5.00 ̂i N /C . A screen for
detecting electrons is positioned parallel to the y axis, at a distance
y=3.00 m .
a) In unit-vector notation, what is the velocity of the electron
when it hits the screen? [11]
b) In unit-vector notation, what is the electron's position
when it hits the screen? [2]
c) What is the change in the electric potential from the
electron's initial position (at the origin) to the point where
it hits the detecting screen? [2]

QUESTION 5 [4 pts]
The figure shows four situations in which four charged particles are evenly spaced to the left and right of
a central point. The charge values are indicated. Rank the situations according to the magnitude of the
net electric field at the central point, greatest to least. Clearly indicate any ties.
