What is Distance Learning For? @ Bath College

There are number of reasons why you might enrol:

• Busy schedule, so flexible timetable is needed

• Looking to improve knowledge related to your career
• Getting back into education
• Gaining knowledge relevant to your personal life
• Starting a business
• Changing careers
• Building personal confidence
What does my course cost? @ Bath College

Level 2

We do not charge learners to enrol for our L2 distance learning

courses. However, this does not mean that they have no value.

When you enrol we have to show you the cost of your course,
but you will never be charged this fee because we use
government funding from the Adult Education Budget instead.

We can only do this if you give us as much information as you

can when filling in enrolment forms, especially your
employment, benefits and national insurance data.
What does my course cost? @ Bath College

Level 3

Level 3 is funded differently. Where possible we prefer to claim full

funding so that a fee is not needed. However, not all learners are
eligible. Learners must meet one of the following criteria:

• You do not already hold a full L3 qualification

• You are unemployed and receiving state benefits
• You are low waged (less than £18,525 per year. Higher if you live
locally to the college)
What does my course cost? @ Bath College
Level 3

A loan is also available for our level 3 courses. This is called the
Advanced Learner Loan. It is like a university tuition loan as it is also
provided by Student Finance England, but it is much smaller. The
repayments start once you earn above £27,295 per year.

Learners wishing to self fund can do so in three instalments, using

standing order payments. Email SalesLedger@bathcollege.ac.uk
for advice on payment plans.

General queries about funding and loans can be emailed to our

Student Advice team at: info@bathcollege.ac.uk.

Democracy

Learners are encouraged to make choices about how and when they study,
making informed decisions in their self-directed study.

Mutual Respect & Tolerance

Learners are encouraged to consider how mutual respect and tolerance applies
to their topics of study. The courses have also been designed with diverse personal
circumstances and backgrounds in mind.

Individual Liberty

Learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own study, assisted by the
college, putting learners in the driving seat with their individualized learning needs
in mind.

Rule of Law

Learners are expected to follow academic standards and the rules which govern
them. This would include rules in place to prevent plagiarism and adhering to
deadlines.
Prevent @ Bath College
Video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Otc2eaRY32s

Prevent involves measures to prevent a young person or vulnerable adult being drawn into terrorism
and or other extremist activities:
• Safeguarding people and communities from threat of terrorism
• 1 of the 4 elements of CONTEST, the Government’s counter terrorism strategy. It aims to stop people
becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism, safeguarding our students to keep them both safe and
within the law
• Prevent duty is not about preventing students from having political and religious views and
concerns but supporting them to use those concerns or act on them in non-extremist ways

Distance Learning Study Tips @ Bath College

• Set a regular time to do your studying

• Set a regular place to do your studying
• Use examples from real life to support your answers e.g. your job, hobbies or
other experiences.
• Read through your work to check it before you submit it.
• Do not copy from the learning materials.
• Check you have added enough detail.
• Use your assessor’s feedback as a guide.
Commitment @ Bath College

Your course, even if you have not paid to

enrol, is a formally accredited and
nationally recognised qualification.

If you are uncertain about whether or not

you can commit to the course now is the
time to discuss this with us by emailing:
DistanceLearning@bathcollege.ac.uk.

Study is flexible, but as an approximate

guide we recommend spending an
average of 6-8 hours per week studying.
This will allow you to submit each unit on
time.
Withdrawal @ Bath College

If you wish to withdraw from your course you

must email us at:
DistanceLearning@bathcollege.ac.uk.

Learners who have already submitted work to

their assessor may be charged an administration
fee of £100. This is a contribution towards the
cost of having their work assessed and
registering them with the awarding body.

Learners with extenuating circumstances are

exempt from being charged, but we may
require evidence of their circumstances. All
evidence is kept strictly confidential.
Distance Learning Study Tips @ Bath College

The Two most common reasons why learners are

asked to resubmit their work:

1. Plagiarism – This is where you use words from other

sources without showing that they are not yours.
Even accidental plagiarism is not acceptable. If
you are unsure, ask your assessor.

2. Not Enough Details – One sentence answers are

not enough. Too much detail is always better than
not having enough. Your assessor’s feedback will
tell you if you are writing too much or too little.
Study Support ® Bath College

We have a dedicated Learning Support

Coordinator who can spend time with you to
overcome any challenges.

This includes, but is not limited to:

• Helping you develop your understanding

• Guidance on what assessment questions are
asking of you
• Find you learning resources matched to your
\ individual requirements
• Can meet with you via email, telephone,
Microsoft Teams, Zoom
Copy + Paste @ Bath College

Learners are encouraged to submit work expressed

in entirely original ways. Copying text in is
discouraged, and your assessor will be adept at
spotting it.

As you move from question to question E-Assessor

will ask you to save your work to avoid any lost
work should anything go wrong.

There is no need to write your answers using a

separate means e.g. a word processor, and then
paste the text in.
Resubmission @ Bath College
“My work has been sent back to me by
my assessor. What do I do next?”

• Don’t be disheartened
• Read through your assessor’s comments in your
feedback.
• If you need more explanation on what’s
required, email your assessor to ask.
• Think about how much more detail you could
put into your work.
• Is there a secondary source – a book or a
website you can cite to add more detail?
• Look at what you have done well. How can
that be used to improve the rest of your work?

Describe Vs Explain @ Bath College

Example: Describe Question 7. Describe the contrasting perspectives introduced through nature
and nurture in the context of development. (AC 2.4)
One of the ongoing debates related to child development is the nature-nurture
debate. This is about whether a child's genetic and bIologtcal make up (nature)
has more impact on their behaviour, personality, health and achievements In life
than the influence of external factors such as life experience learning and family
and social situation (nurture).
For those that believe nature as the pnmary influence, the personality and
potential of the child is largely fix~at birth and childhood experience and
upbringing have little effect This means that whether childhood experience Is
negative or positive, the child W1II develop in the same way: the way the child will
develop 1s largely 1xed at birth.
Describe Vs Explain @ Bath College

Example: Explain
Question 11. Explain the roles of governments, individuals, organisations and
non-governmental organ isations (NGOs) in sustainable development.
(U1 AC 3 .3)
Examples for govern ments include developing sustainable development strategies
and policies. Examples for NGOs include holding governments to account and
helping poor communities. Examples for organisat ions and individuals include using
environmentally friendly products, reducing consumption and recycl ing correctly.
