Discussion 1
Education is a valuable resource in acquiring skills and knowledge. Our education begins at
home. Then, as we grow older, we go to schools, colleges, and other educational institutions.
Education brings positive changes in a person’s life. It enhances one’s knowledge, skills, and intellect
as well as enabling one to lead a more productive life.
Education makes us humble. Education creates awareness and broadens our horizons. We
become more aware of ourselves, society, and everything that surrounds us and affects our lives. It
helps us to cultivate a positive attitude. An educated person wants to be respected in society.
Education enables us to earn a living.
Education gives us the ability to get a good job. We need money to live. With the advancement
of science and technology, our needs have grown exponentially. Apart from the necessities of life such
as food, shelter and clothing, we also need other luxuries such as cell phones, air-conditioners, or
even cars. Education is critical to ending the problem of unemployment in our country. It is also
essential to improve trade and commerce and bring prosperity to our country. However, in addition to
the advanced education system, there is a growing need for vocational education.
The learner should be familiar with history, geography, religion, culture and traditions, in
general education. Therefore, public education should educate all students up to the second level.
Then, depending on the student’s ability, they should choose a higher education or join a skill training
institute to improve their abilities.

Task 1
An expository text gives the information and all facts that the reader needs to understand the subject.
Now, identify the text below and answer the questions given.
“Since I am an avid reader, it is very difficult to choose a particular storybook. But if I were to
choose the only one, I would read about Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick, or the Whale. The novel was
written in 1851 and it is about a confrontation between a man and a whale. Captain Ahab, the protagonist,
is chasing the white whale, because he had lost the leg to the animal. The captain wants to avenge Moby
Dick, and no one can convince a raged man that his aspiration to kill the animal is pointless and may even
lead to his own death. Eventually, Captain Ahab traces the whale and begins a long chase. But Moby Dick
does not want to lose his life easily. The injured animal destroys the boat and kills all his pursuers. The
only man left is Ishmael, a narrator who entered the whaling ship to satisfy the wanderlust.”

After leaving Reavis, I must attend college because it is definitely a requirement for becoming a
veterinarian. In fact, a bachelor’s degree is necessary in order to even enter a veterinarian program. One
must also possess excellent communication, leadership, public speaking, and organizational skills. I have
put a lot of thought and consideration into college, and I have decided that I would like to go to the
University of Illinois. It is a wonderful school, and they even have a graduate program designed for
students who want to become veterinarians. Once I have completed a veterinarian program, I will be able
to pursue my dream career. This career provides numerous benefits, the first of which is salary. The
average veterinarian salary is $60,000 a year, a salary that would definitely allow me to live a comfortable
life.
Secondly, it is a rewarding job. This job would provide me with the satisfaction of knowing that I
am helping or saving an animal’s life. Finally, becoming a veterinarian would assure me a lifetime of
happiness. I know I would love going to my job every day, because I would be working with what I love
most: animals. In summary, when I graduate from Reavis, I plan to go to college to become a veterinarian. I
love animals and I want to do anything that I can to help them. I know I am only a freshman, but I also
know that I am growing up quickly. As Ferris Bueller quotes, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and
look around once in a while, you could miss it!”
