"EXPLORING THE INFLUENCE

OF SURROUNDINGS ON
GENDER IDENTITY"
BY ALLENJENN R. AQUINO

INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND VIEW
Gender roles are the societal expectations and norms
regarding the behaviors, attitudes, and activities that are
considered appropriate for individuals based on their
perceived gender. Understanding the formation of gender
roles is crucial as it impacts how individuals perceive
themselves and others, as well as how they are expected to
behave in different social contexts. By examining the
influence of one's social environment, including family, peers,
and media, we can gain insights into the complex nature of
gender identity development.
SOCIAL
ENVIRONMENT
The social environment encompasses
various factors such as family dynamics,
peer interactions, and exposure to media
influences, all of which contribute
significantly to the formation of gender
roles. By understanding how these external
forces influence our understanding of
gender, we can begin to deconstruct and
challenge traditional gender norms. This
slide sets the stage for a deeper dive into
the specific influences of family, peers, and
media on the construction of gender roles,
highlighting the importance of critically
examining the sources that shape our
perceptions of gender.

FAMILY INFLUENCE
We look at how families can affect the way we see gender
roles. Our families are often the first people we learn from,
and they can teach us what they think boys and girls
should do. For example, they might give us toys or clothes
based on our gender. Sometimes, families have certain
expectations for boys and girls, like how they should
behave or what jobs they should have. These early lessons
from our families can stay with us for a long time and
influence how we think about gender when we grow up.
Siblings and extended family members also contribute to
this socialization process, further reinforcing gender
stereotypes.
PEER
INFLUENCE
In this slide, we focus on the influence of peers
on our understanding of gender roles. Peers, or
friends of the same age group, play a
significant role in shaping our views on gender.
They can reinforce or challenge the ideas we
learn from our families and other sources. Peer
groups often have their own set of norms and
expectations regarding gender, which can
impact how we express our gender identity. For
example, peers might encourage certain
behaviors or interests based on gender
stereotypes. Understanding the influence of
peers can help us recognize how social
interactions with friends can shape our beliefs
about gender.

MEDIA INFLUENCE
Media, including television, movies, advertisements, and
social media, plays a powerful role in shaping societal
perceptions of gender. From a young age, we are exposed to
images and messages that portray certain gender
stereotypes. For instance, in many movies and TV shows,
boys are often shown as adventurous and strong, while girls
are depicted as nurturing and sensitive. Advertisements often
reinforce these stereotypes by promoting products based on
gender, such as toys or clothing. Social media also
contributes to this influence by showcasing idealized images
of masculinity and femininity. Understanding the impact of
media on gender roles is essential for recognizing how these
portrayals can influence our beliefs and behaviors.
PERSONAL
REFLECTION
As a college student, reflecting on my gender
role is an opportunity to consider how the
surroundings have influenced my own identity.
College is a time of exploration and growth,
where I may encounter diverse perspectives and
experiences that challenge my previous notions
of gender. Reflecting on my family, peers, and
media influences can help me understand how
these factors have shaped my own beliefs and
behaviors. It's also a chance to evaluate whether
I am comfortable with my current gender role or
if there are aspects of myself that would like to
change or explore further. This self-reflection
can lead to a deeper understanding of my gender
identity and how it intersects with other aspects
of my life.
CONCLUSION
As I conclude my understandings about the impact of social
environment on gender roles by summarizing the key points
from the previous slides. We have seen how various factors,
including family, peers, and media, contribute to the formation
of gender roles. Families play a significant role in shaping early
perceptions of gender, while peer groups can reinforce or
challenge these notions. Additionally, media representations of
gender can influence societal expectations and stereotypes. As
college students, reflecting on these influences can help us
better understand our own gender identity and how it is shaped
by our surroundings. By critically examining these influences,
we can work towards breaking free from traditional gender
norms and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
