SUMMARY/ ABSTRACT:

Tourism comprise a huge part in the Philippine economy and Hotels are crucial in its growth and
recovery as accommodation is a basic necessity for every individual, especially when travelling. And with
travelers also seeking leisure, Resort Hotels address these needs. In this study, the researchers looked into
the different considerations in the design of Resort Hotels and its potential users. Quantitative and
qualitative methods paired with derived data were the selected method in this research, using secondary
data sources from literatures regarding Dipaculao and Aurora such as Records and statistics from Local
Government Units and National Government Agencies. Examples of these are 2019 Philippine Tourism
Statistics and the Regional Distribution of Overnight Travelers in Accommodation Establishments 2019 of
Department of Tourism. The researchers also conducted case studies of different existing Resort Hotels and
other similar developments, both international and local, to gather relevant data and information. The
Results revealed that the Resort Hotels featured in the case studies, particularly the Amanpulo Resort and
the Nay Palad Hideaway for local, and the J. W Marriot, Los Cabos Beach Resort and Spa and the Swissotel
Resort Bodrum Beach for international, have created a good relationship between the architecture and
natural elements of the site and utilized materials indigenous to the area, to minimize the impact of
construction in its respective sites. Furthermore, the data revealed that the top visitors to the Philippines in
the last 5 years have come from Korea, followed by China and USA in no particular order, with Holiday
and Leisure being their main purpose of visit and with Warm Hospitality and Beautiful Sceneries being
their most liked about the Philippines. However, the results have also shown that Foreign Travelers only
comprise 0.08% from the specified total population in the last 5 years, and the rest have all been Domestic
Travelers. In addition, the results revealed that Dipaculao has temperatures ranging from 22°C as the lowest
and 32°C as the highest, for the whole year round. The average temperatures are suitable for tourists both
domestic and foreign.

CHAPTER 1: BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

1.1 Introduction

Tourism is a vital sector of the Philippine economy, especially that the country is known for its rich
biodiversity, natural resources, history, and culture, that gives it a significant competitive advantage in the
industry. Furthermore, experiencing the natural wonders of the country is only made more wonderful
because of the warmth and hospitality of the Filipinos. That is why developing the tourism sector possess
endless opportunities in generating job and livelihood for the local residents, enriching the local culture and
tradition, nation-building, and paving the way for a robust economy.

Hotels play a huge role in the growth and recovery of the tourism sector as accommodation is a
key factor in attracting tourists into a region since the need for a place to eat, rest and sleep, especially when
traveling, has always been a primary necessity for every individual. In addition, travelers nowadays are
seeking, not only the basic necessities, but also leisure and pleasure. Resort Hotels address these needs;
hence, the quantity and quality of available resort hotels may greatly affect the potential and the success of
tourism in every region as it goes hand in hand.

The designers must recognize the effects of the built environment on the development and growth
of tourism, its benefits to the local community and effects to the natural environment. They should be
knowledgeable of the different factors that should be considered in the design of Resort Hotels and its
potential users, the possible Architectural solutions to make the most out of the development, and
interventions to mitigate the effects of the structure to the natural environment and the local community.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study was directed towards its main objective which is the design and planning of a Resort
Hotel Complex that the owner envisions as an all-year-round tourist destination that is inclusive and
experiential to its diverse users, sustainable, innovative, and boosts the economy of the province by bringing
more employment for the local citizens. Particularly, the researchers sought to find out the different factors
that should be considered, the accreditation requirements provided by the Department of Tourism, the space
requirements and the amenities that should be integrated in the development, and the possible architectural
solutions to meet the client’s needs in the design of a Resort Hotel Complex?

1.3 Goal

● To be able to Design a 5-Star Beach Resort Hotel Complex that is Adaptive, Innovative, Inclusive,
and Responsive to the contemporary needs of the community that would cater to the needs of both
local and foreign travelers from various countries.

CHAPTER 2: CASE STUDIES

2.1 CASE STUDY (Local)

2.1.1Amanpulo Resort

Architect: Francisco Mañosa and Partners Location: Pamalican Island, Palawan

Introduction:

For seven years in a row, APIDA has

crowned the Amanpulo Resort "The Best
Beach Resort in the World." The Amanpulo
Resort's main clubhouse was created to give
resort guests more convenience during their
stay. The library, dining rooms, music rooms,
and pool bathhouses are all available at the
Amanpulo, Philippines | Traveller Made
clubhouse. The building was inspired by the
communal forms of a native hamlet, where the roofline creates a continuous undulating pattern that
combines both the beach and the mountains beyond the beach. The term aman, which means "peaceful
island" in Sanskrit, was used to name the resort. While the island is gorgeous, with abundant vegetation and
animals, Architect Bobby Mañosa's native-style houses, which are akin to native communities, contributed
to the resort's more laid-back yet elegant vibe.

Design and Planning:

The stunning Amanpulo Resort in Palawan was conceived as a 'deconstructed-kubo. In the design,
he used sustainable elements including renewable energy, natural light, and locally sourced materials such
as wood, marble, and pebbles. The design also maximizes the tropical weather in the country by utilizing
passive cooling and natural lighting and practices such as water recycling, garbage composts and low VOC
paints. Preservation of indigenous Flora and Fauna are also considered.

The 40 casitas at Amanpulo, which are largely modeled

after the Philippine bahay kubo, are twin-roofed bungalows in
hillside and coastal locations (native dwelling). Pebblewashed
walls, coconut-shell tables, a king-size bed with a rattan
headboard, and sliding-glass doors that show outdoor decks and
its divans are among the decorative interior touches that reflect
the islands. Twin vanities, separate changing rooms, a shower, amanpuloresort.palawanshore.com

and a beautiful bathtub are included in the huge marble bathroom, which is lighted by large windows with
wooden shuttersBeach Casitas has its own private walk that leads directly to the white-sand beach via a
tangle of shrubbery. Treetop Casitas are located on higher land, above the treeline. Hillside Casitas offer
unobstructed views of the sea while its Deluxe counterparts offer breathtaking views of the Sulu Sea and
nearby islands, as well as dawn and sunset vistas. Private holiday Villas are offered for rent just a few
meters from the sea. There are eight villas with four bedrooms, two villas with two bedrooms, and one villa
with one bedroom. Each has its own private pool, bedrooms, living and dining pavilions, outdoor patio, and
kitchen.

Clubs

From the pool, a garden walkway leads to the white-sand beach and Amanpulo's Beach Club. The
open-air pavilion provides a relaxing atmosphere. On the deck, facing the sea, mattresses and pillows are
put out. The beach is lined with shade umbrellas and reclining lounge chairs. The Beach Club also serves
breakfast, lunch, supper, snacks, and drinks.

Lagoon Club is located on the island's east side and serves as a backup beach club with similar features and
services. Dinner is served, with a focus on Vietnamese cuisine. The Windsurf Hut Pizza serves a wide
selection of pizzas prepared in a custom-built wood-fired oven. A guest casita is open 24 hours a day.
Shigerino's Place, Lagoon Sala, Shark's Point Sala, and the floating Kawayan Bar may all host private
picnics and barbecues. On an island-hopping tour or a visit to the Sandbar, guests can also bring picnic
hampers. Other facilities are composed of the D Library, Spa Casitas, Boutiques, Meeting Rooms, Gym,
Swimming Pool, and Sea Sports Spot.

Result:

Through implementing green initiatives, Amanpulo Resort has continued to be one of the top resorts
possibly in the world. It has helped in maintaining the identity of the area while also preserving its own
beauty resulting in a sustainable architecture.

2.1.2Nay Palad Hideaway

Architect: Daniel Pouzet Location: Siargao, Philippines

Introduction:

The picturesque tropical island of Siargao is home to Nay Palad Hideaway. It rests between historic
mangrove trees and a lovely white sand beach. Nay Palad Hideaway is the ideal site for a luxury surf retreat,
since it is well situated to reach the area's waves and to explore further. The resort is unique in that all

packages are all-inclusive, so you can forget about your pocketbook and enjoy whatever your heart desires
once you arrive! The onsite surf staff will take you to the best waves of the day, and there are plenty of
activities for non-surfers to enjoy.

Design and Planning

The lovely Nay Palad is a palm-fringed sanctuary

in Siargao that is naturally shielded from the
tropical nature all around it. The resort successfully
integrates classic architecture, cutting-edge design,
and the natural surroundings, with an emphasis on
outdoor living and sustainability.Within the four-

acre property, nine big and stylish thatched houses
are dispersed across groomed grounds. Each one is made of repurposed wood and has an open shower, a
spacious veranda, and modern decor.

There are 4 Deluxe Villas that offer a 34 sq.m. master bedroom and a 28 sq.m. bedroom upstairs
each. 4 Superior Villas offer a more spacious space with a 32-38 sq.m. master bedroom. There is only 1
Superior Family Villa that offers 2 separate 32-38 sq.m. double bedrooms. Each villa has its amenities but
none can top the crowned jewel of the Nay Palad Villas, the Perlah Villa. This large villa offers two 50
sq.m. master bedrooms, a 21 sq.m. double bedroom, 3 bathrooms and an indoor lounge that can be
converted into a single bedroom if needed.

Sustainability:

Colorful array of vegetables and herbs are raised at their own organic farm, which brings together
all of Siargao's enticing flavors and scents. Each organic vegetables are farmed according to the seasons,
using sustainable and ethical methods. To reduce inter-island traffic, Siargao's organic and local produce
will be served. Supporting and collaborating with local fishermen to provide the freshest harvest from the
sea.

Nay Palad Hideaway partakes in The Long Run Initiative which aims to develop truly sustainable
luxury experiences by including the "4Cs" — conservation, community, culture, and commerce — to help
ensure that these special places are preserved for future generations. Straws and plastic bottles have been
banned completely. Single-use plastic packaging is prohibited. Cleaning and planting are being done on a
regularly to help preserve the beautiful mangrove. Stopping dynamite fishing and supporting marine life in
the lagoon in front of the resort are also observed. Rainwater is collected and used to irrigate the plants.

Natural and biodegradable cleaning materials are used. For waste management, they follow the
REDUCE – REUSE – RECYCLE principle. All green waste is shredded and composted in their farm. To
reduce environmental impact, the resort is built and maintained with locally sourced materials.

Result:

By maximizing the majestic views of the site as one of its main attractions, the resort has
successfully preserved the beauty of its natural surroundings. By using the materials indigenous to the
province, they have minimized the impact of construction in the island. This has resulted in a successful
and sustainable resort.

2.2 CASE STUDY (International)

2.2.1 J. W MARRIOT, LOS CABOS BEACH RESORT AND SPA.

Location: Puerto Los Cabos, Mexico Architect: Olson Kundig

Background

The J.W Marriot Puerto Los Cabos Resort is a 561,000 Square-foot resort with 299 rooms. The
Design Principal Jim Olson states that “To me, being close to nature is the greatest luxury in the world. The
design of the JW Marriott is intended to create an intimate relationship with this spectacular natural setting.”
This Statement translates the design of the resort as it seamlessly blends architecture and art with the desert
landscape and the great view of the Pacific Ocean of the site. Despite being isolated from the water by a
35-foot-tall dune, the resort generates an immediate link from entry to the ocean via a horizon-framing main
arrival hall and natural, adventure-inducing routes throughout the resort.

Design and Planning

“My main inspiration was the power of the ocean and bringing its power into every part of this
hotel. When you move through the spaces, there are always moments where your eye can focus on the
outdoors. The architecture is designed to frame nature.” –Jim
Olson Design Principal.

The landscape design of the resort compliments the

architecture and strengthen the site’ natural context. The
design uses indigenous species of plants such as cardon plant,
a type of thorn scrub and native Torote and Palo Blanco trees. https://www.archdaily.com/922692/jw-marriot-los-cabos-beach-

and Mexican Fan Palms to create transition between grand built spaces to natural forms and uses exotic
plants to introduce bolder colors on its landscapes.

The resort is built with and intimate scale by having a cadence of tall
columns inspired by Pre-Columbian architecture that moves the visitor forward.
Huge steel girders are coated in dark wood in vast gathering areas like the 8,000
square foot ballroom, and soffits are utilized throughout to add warmth and a
human scale to large rooms.

site.

The views of the Pacific Ocean are the center

of attraction from nearly every point of the complex,
as the visitors explore the whole resort with its
intuitive pathways. After you pass the main entrance,
two infinity pools would welcome you as if it is
connected with the ocean. Guests are welcomed with
unexpected views of the ocean as they wander across
the property, which is bordered by natural vegetation https://www.archdaily.com/922692/jw-marriot-los-cabos-beach-resort-and-

front of the resort. The guest rooms, library, bar, and restaurant feature rich textures and warm desert hues
that give the interiors a delicate natural elegance

Result

The concept of the J.W Marriot resort directly translates to its planning and design; it is visible on its
physical appearance as if it blends to its natural setting by the use of natural colors and native trees and
landscape. Creating a good relationship between the architecture and natural elements of the site is a good
choice for a resort, it creates a comfort and welcoming relaxation place for people who wants to rest and
unwind.

Location: Turgutreis Bodrum, Turkey Architect: GAD Architecture

Background

The Swissotel resort in Turgutreis, Turkey is a waterfront development of a resort complex in

Bodrum peninsula with 60 enclosed rooms, 46 apartments, 27 residential villas with spa, gym and pool
complex. It is located on a site with a gentle slope having a clear view of Turgutreis marina. GAD's design
responds to the most urgent constraints inherent in this location, siting a high density building on a site with
a restricted slope while affording a direct sea-view from each room.

Planning and Design

The design of the resort uses sweeping lines to integrate the

Aegean Coast’s undulating terrain with local tangerine gardens,
merging the structure with the natural setting by creating stone-clad
facades with outside vertical gardens. https://www.archdaily.com/773110/swissotel-resort-

CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, we explored the data that are essential to the research problem of the design and
planning of the Beach Resort Hotel Complex. To tackle the research objectives, this research used
quantitative methods to analyze the derived data from secondary sources. The study area and data sources
were discussed under this chapter.

Quantitative and qualitative methods paired with derived data were the selected method in this
research as it posts advantages suitable for the research problem. First, the quantitative approach allowed
the study to focus on statistics or series of information. This is reliable in analyzing the demographics of
tourists in Dipaculao, as well as assessing the variables relevant to the design and planning of the hotel such
as climate and temperature. The data collection is immediate. Statistical analysis was performed quickly
from sources available. This approach allowed the study to reach large sample sizes. Because of the
statistics provided, the study is able reach a large sample size that is reliable for generalized conclusion.
The reliability of large sample sizes was important to accurately predict the trends affecting the design
proposal. Second, qualitative approach allowed the study to include human attitudes and experience.
Understanding the qualitative aspects of the research such as culture is integral to the research and design
process. Since numbers did not always embody factors that drive human behavior, it is imperative to include
them in the research. Obtaining these qualitative and quantitative data allowed the researchers to understand
and predict the trends and context of the design problem; accurately predicting these factors are important
in order to formulate a proper planning and design of the Beach Resort Hotel Complex.

3.1 The Study Area

lOMoARcPSD|39377935

The area of the study was determined based on the given design problem. The population of the
study focuses on the demographics of tourists. This pertains to the volume of the tourists that is inbound to
Aurora Province annually, as well as nationality. The tourist demographics was selected because they will
be the target audience of the design proposal. This data collection was performed from October 21, 2021,
to October 27, 2021.

3.2 Data Sources

Secondary Sources

Secondary data sources have been attained from literatures regarding Dipaculao and Aurora.
Records and statistics from Local Government Units and National Government Agencies were utilized in
this research. Examples of these are 2019 Philippine Tourism Statistics and the Regional Distribution of
Overnight Travelers in Accommodation Establishments 2019 of Department of Tourism. This is in addition
to articles published online, web search engine results and PowerPoint presentations.

3.3 Data Collection Methods

Secondary data collection methods

The secondary data means that the data was gathered by someone other than the researcher. To
attain necessary data, the user conducted a literature search using the web search engine Google Scholar.
Based on the selection, irrelevant articles to the research problem and objectives were ruled out. Before the
screening, the researchers reviewed articles, web pages, and reports. After reading the literatures based on
their title and content, the researchers finalized the data that will reach the output.

3.4 Methods of Data Analysis

3.4.1 Quantitative Data Analysis

Quantitative data were attained from secondary sources. This data analysis has been created with graphical
analysis and description. The statistics and records were tabulated and analyzed to identify major tourist
trends that will be used in the design and planning.

3.4.2 Qualitative Data Analysis

Qualitative data such as information about the local culture of Dipaculao were used to support the design
goals. In addition to this, qualitative data were used to identify the driving factors and relationship behind
the trends of tourist that is inbound to Dipaculao and Aurora. Distinct aspects of the community, such as
biodiversity described in available literatures will be used in the design process.

The first presented data implies that consistently, for the last five years the Top 3 Leading
Nationalities to visit the country are the Koreans, Chinese, and the Americans. The fourth and fifth place
interchange between Japan, Australia, and Taiwan, the mentioned countries greatly represent the other top
countries not mentioned, since the others are mainly East Asian and Western countries. With the countries
mostly being from countries with different climate, they experience the natural instinct of Seasonal
Migration. As defined by National Geographic, Seasonal Migration is a type of Human Migration that
responds to labor or climatic conditions. This type of migration is primarily attributed with tourism and
agriculture. For this study about tourism, tourists commonly seek leisure to where they can really have a
whole new vacation experience, which is attainable by seeking a place with different conditions as to where
they reside. Knowing the major foreign patrons for the tourism industry, it is beneficial to design spaces
and amenities which flexibly cater their cultural norms, doing so lets them know that they are appreciated
and welcome giving them an amplified feel of the already great hospitality that we Filipinos and our culture
possess.

On a more specific scale, presented in the next data are the number of tourists that stay on the
accommodation establishments in Aurora, the location of Municipality of Dipaculao. This data shows that
Domestic Travelers are the major occupants of the accommodation establishments, and Foreign Travelers
only comprise 0.08% from the specified total population in the last 5 years. One reason to this is the lack
of infrastructure that can cater inbound foreign travels, there is a nearby community airport on the adjacent
Municipality of Baler, only capable of servicing its surrounding municipalities, the other one is an airstrip
in Casiguran, Aurora. Commonly, foreigners tend to stay on accommodations near airports out of
convenience. Dipaculao, facing the Pacific Ocean ironically has no seaport for inbound tourists, there is
only cargo and fish port for the community. For now, the only means to get to Dipaculao is by land travel.

The presented data state that Holiday/Leisure is the major reason why tourists visit the country,
other leading factors that are most liked about the Philippines were Warm Hospitality and Beautiful
Sceneries. Leading answers on both statistics apply to the Municipality of Dipaculao, in terms of
Holiday/Leisure, it also offers the famous waves that made the province a famous surfing spot. Aside from
surfing, tourists can also trek on the surrounding portions of Sierra Madre Mountain Range. About Warm
Hospitality it is already innate, just amplified further by tourism. Underrated, Dipaculao is also blessed with
Beautiful Sceneries, and providing the 5-Star Hotel furtherly solidify the tourist experience.

Climate greatly affect the tourism sector, especially those mainly showcasing the nature. Dipaculao
has temperatures ranging from 22°C as the lowest and 32°C as the highest, for the whole year round. The
average temperatures are suitable for tourists both domestic and foreign, it enables them to maximize their
travel itinerary without worrying how temperature affect their health. Next factor is the precipitation,
Dipaculao being in Aurora falls under TYPE IV climate of the Corona Classification, this means that the
region has no specific dry or wet season. Being located on the east of Sierra Madre Mountain Range,
Dipaculao face the Pacific Ocean without any barriers against typhoons and other weather phenomena.
Being defenseless also turnout as a great opportunity, because in recent years the strong winds that
create big waves also boosted the tourism economy by having a surfing spot that would attract tourists from
any point in the world. Lastly, the average wind speed in the province is around 2 m/s, with easterly and
northeasterly winds dominating through the majority of the year, with this given, the peak months are long,
only breaking when westerly winds come from about June to September.

4.4 Conclusion

There are much that can be integrated from the data unto designing the Proposed Beach Resort
Hotel Complex. Along with creating spaces that function flexibly, the complex as a whole should also be
able to cater the different culture that it will receive, from the different regions in the Philippines up to the

different nationalities that there is. Even with the leading nationalities to visit the country being consistent
with the same names for the past 5 years, the proposed complex shall be culture flexible, enabling other
nationalities also to practice freely what is innate to them to let them experience leisure with a sense of
freedom.

With the non-existence of infrastructures to support tourism, the issue of low foreign travelers turn
out can primarily be resolved by strong tourism campaign and advertisement. Next to strong campaigns,
there should be a manifesting structure that the municipality can claim as theirs, creating an accommodation
for tourists that would be an attraction itself. The intended design for the Proposed Beach Resort Hotel
Complex should infuse luxury with the existing Filipino Culture and Identity. This can be done by
integrating 5-Star Hotel design standard into concepts, ornamentations, services, etc. that is uniquely
Filipino. Lastly, the site being too open, proposed design should adapt with the locality. Analyzing the
settlements, local materials, and methods they use in construction that enables the existing settlements to
withstand strong winds without the protection of Sierra Madre, and the different conditions of being by the
seaside.

CHAPTER 5: RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS

The presented case study featuring Local and Foreign Resort Hotels, imparted on us that it is
somehow viable to create a harmonious connection between architecture and the natural elements that the
site possess. Practicing architecture that blends well with its locality does not only maximize what the
municipality as a whole has to offer, this also minimize the possible negative impacts that may occur on
the course of the construction and maintenance. Another take away from the research are the tourist
statistics, showing that there is a consistency for the past five years on what nationalities visit the country
most. Even if foreign tourists only comprise 0.08% of the tourist population for the past 5 years in Aurora,
we aim to highlight the major reasons why they visit the country on the Proposed Beach Resort Hotel
Complex. For the purpose of sustainability, we target on utilizing the winds and the atmospheric
temperature in the vicinity to the design of spaces, as these factors are on suitable levels for the domestic
and foreign travelers. For a positive impact to the community, researchers recommend involving the local
inhabitants with the construction process, maintenance, and resort hotel operations. Integrating vernacular
materials and methods is one way of emanating how the pre-existing structures withstand the conditions in
the municipality. Raising the habitable portions of the structure must be done, as the area has threats of sea
level rise and storm surge. Lastly, it is recommended to allot ample open spaces to where everyone can
commune, and where the multi-cultural patrons can freely do what they want to.
