Issue: Respect

Argument

We must always respect the decisions and opinions of others.

Counter Argument

We do not need to respect the decisions and opinions of others all the time.

In situations where individuals are making choices that may have severe negative consequences for
themselves or others, there is a moral obligation to intervene and guide them towards healthier
decisions. Respecting their autonomy is essential, but there are circumstances where imposing
guidance becomes an ethical imperative.

Counter argument – Justification

1.We may not be able to unconditionally respect the decisions of others when they conflict with our
core values. In such cases, it is essential to engage in constructive dialogue and seek solutions while
upholding our own values.

2.Sometimes, it is necessary to challenge different opinions and decisions to foster personal and
collective learning and growth. Questioning and reflecting on diverse perspectives can facilitate
innovation and development.

3. If someone else's decision involves unethical or harmful behavior, we cannot acquiesce to such
actions. We have a responsibility to take appropriate steps to stop or prevent such behavior,
prioritizing the protection of ourselves and others over unconditional respect for those decisions.

Justification 1

Respect should be given to an individual's identity regardless of their background.

Justification 2

Respect should be given because people have different perspectives.

Justification 3

Respect includes allowing individuals the autonomy to make their own decisions.

Real life example - Looking Beyond race in adoption (News)

Aaliyah and her husband signed up with OrphanCare with the intention of adopting a child. The fact
that the agency responded quickly and informed them about a baby available for adoption indicates
a mutual respect for the couple's desire to become parents.

Decision Making in Adoption:

In both stories, the prospective adoptive parents actively participated in the decision-making
process. They visited the children, saw them for the first time, and made the choice to adopt. This
involvement reflects a mutual respect for the adoptive parents' role in choosing and committing to
raising a child.

Openness About Adoption:

Aaliyah plans to eventually tell her adopted daughter, Sophia, about her adoption. This commitment
to being open and honest about the child's background demonstrates respect for the child's right to
know and understand their own history.

Conclusion

Respect is one of the most important things in life to create peace, healthy relationships, and to
make this world a better place to live in.

Inspired by Tom Hardy's words, "I extend the same respect to the janitor as I do to the CEO,"
adopting this philosophy enriches our lives and cultivates an environment where diverse opinions are
treated with equal consideration. So, let's us build a society based on a strong respect foundation,
where we appreciate each person and welcome differences as important parts of our shared
humanity.
