A VERY LONG DREAM

Aboriginal Australians could be the oldest population of humans living outside of

Africa.
Back in the past, Aboriginal Australians lived over huge areas of the continent
isolated on many islands. The way they looked like is still unclear. This means that, at the
moment a lot of world scientists and experts are doing different types of research
regarding the genetics of Aboriginal groups. Some evidence suggests that they share a
lot with ancient Asian people. Another current theory says that those early migrants
themselves came out of Africa about 70,000 years ago. This might make Aboriginal
Australians the oldest population of humans living outside Africa.

1. Who do the Aboriginal people probably look most like?

a. Mostly like ancient Asian people.
b. Mostly like ancient African people.
c. Mostly like Australian people.

Hunting was an important part of Aboriginal survival. Animals and the natural
environment influenced the Aboriginal people’s religious beliefs of the creation of the
world, too. For spiritual reasons, it was important for them to preserve and respect the
world around them. Perhaps there was no more important aspect of Aboriginal mythology
than the concept of the Dreaming or Dreamtime. Spirits or Ancestral Beings, created the
world during the Dreamtime. These spirits made the land, the oceans and the sky-and
everything in those areas. More importantly, they also created the rules for living. It is a
fact that generations passed this knowledge to other generations through different stories,
songs, dances and ceremonies.
Sometimes the spirits were invisible supernatural forces. Other times, they took a
physical form with human and animal traits.

2. What was the most important aspect of Aboriginal mythology?

a. The Ancestral Beings.
b. Hunting.
c. The Dreaming or Dreamtime.
3. What was the Dreaming?
a. The Aboriginal people’s belief of the creation of the world.
b. The Aboriginal people’s belief that nature is important.
c. The Aboriginal people’s belief that spirits exist.

4. What did the Ancestral Beings do?

a. They created the hunting-and-gathering lifestyle.
b. They created the world and the rules for living.
c. They created the Aboriginal people’s religious beliefs.

5. What physical form did the Ancestral Beings sometimes take?

a. They took a form with elemental characteristics.
b. They took a form with plant and animal characteristics.
c. They took a form with human and animal characteristics.

Today, about three percent of Australia’s population has Aboriginal heritage.

Aboriginal Australians still struggle to keep their ancient culture. They also fight against
the Australian government to get back their lands. When you hear how an Aboriginal
person speaks, you can notice that most of them speak English with Aboriginal phrases
and words. However, if you address them as “Aborigines” that is very rude and unfeeling,
because it has racist connotations from Australia’s colonial past. You’re more likely to
make friends by saying “Aboriginal person” or “Aboriginal”. These people in Australia
continue to protest using slogans like “We want land rights, not handouts”. They need
and attract worldwide support to Aboriginal communities’ right to live on their traditional
lands.

6. Do Aboriginal people in Australia have the same rights as others?

a. No, they are still fighting against discrimination.
b. Yes, they have the right to live on their traditional lands.
c. Only three percent have the same rights.

7. Calling out “Aborigine” is

a. offensive.
b. a way to make a friend.
c. a polite way of addressing an Australian Aboriginal.
