Reviews:
An essential tool for researchers who wish to be widely versed in key methods and approaches, from
experiments to ethnography. The content is clear, practical, and concise, orienting beginning readers to
important themes and issues and directing advanced readers to additional, in-depth resources. I highly
recommend it.

Heather C. Hill
Professor in Education, Harvard University

This textbook has admirable breadth and could provide a point of reference on a range of topics for
students to explore comparisons with treatments in other texts. The best of the chapters such as Waring's
on Grounded Theory and Hammersley's on Research Ethics offer a concise and lucid overview of their
subject. Useful features include the brief and often challenging "questions for further investigation". The
breadth of coverage means that more detailed texts will be needed for those seeking guidance on project
design and research practice, but it has undoubted potential for providing introductory support on
unfamiliar subjects.
