4 Mobile apps to practice English pronunciation

Communicating is essential to be able to develop in our daily lives and when doing it in a
foreign language such as English, it is necessary to have a good pronunciation in order to
ensure our message can be understood correctly, have a correct pronunciation can be
difficult even for native English speakers, for that reason we should practice; however, due
to the daily lives of many people it can be complicated to do so, but thanks to technology
we can do it from where just by using a mobile device.

Some mobile apps we can make use of:

- Learn English Sounds Right

- ELSA Speak, English Accent Coach
- FluentU
- Say It, English Pronunciation
- Sounds, Pronunciation App
- Howjsay
- English Speak Pro

A proper pronunciation allows to be a master in the English Language. A correct

pronunciation is needed so our vocabulary will be effective enough when communicating.
Is better to know fewer words but pronounce correctly than know a lot of words and be
pronounced badly, for that reason the mentioned apps can help us to improve our
pronunciation and gives opportunity to increase our communication quality. Because of this
constraint, technology is becoming more appropriate support in teaching pronunciation
(González, 2012).

It should be noted that implementing mobile technologies into the teaching and learning
process appears to be a challenging task since there are a variety of factors impeding the
adoption of m-learning, e.g., technical, cultural, and learner-centered factors (Bidin &
Ziden, 2013; Kumar & Chand, 2019)
2.1.5 How an online app can help students to reinforce pronunciation of IPA?

Is important to recognize the necessary of having a good pronunciation, especially for

English learners. Speaking (in English) is a skill that can effectively show how well a
learner performs his or her second language learning (Janu, 2020). Gilakjani (2016) states
that understandable pronunciation is one of the basic requirements of learners’ competence,
and it is also one of the most important features of language instruction.

To improve the pronunciation skill, some students make use of online apps, which provide
great number of benefits for teachers and students. Vazquez (2014) states that smartphone
and other mobile devices are useful for teaching resources for university students both
distance and face to face learning.

We can even mention that by using an online app properly to reinforce pronunciation,
students can get better results, because some of them are shy or afraid to practice in front of
others what affects directly to the learning process, but by having an online app where they
can practice alone and anywhere, allows to get more confident and practice in their own
safe place. As long as the student has the opportunity to utilize an online app for learning
by themselves instead of the classroom will reduce learning anxiety as the learner won’t
have the teacher or peer pressure at determining their ways of learning.

There have been found dominant benefits of smartphones, including usefulness, efficiency,
interactivity, and convenience, in assisting learners and instructors in an educational
context (Cheung, 2015).

An online app can help directly the students by providing feedback in real-time on their
pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary usage. The feedback will allow the student identify
the areas for improvement and make the proper corrections as long as they are learning,
which allows them to learn fast but at their own pace.
