STATISTICS &
PROBABILITY
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
In this module, we can calculate and solve
the average of a discrete random variable. The
term average is the mean or the expected
value or the expectation in probability and
statistics. Once we have calculated the
probability distribution for a random variable,
we can calculate its expected value. The mean
of a random variable shows the location or
the central tendency of the random variable.
Let’s have this first for a review.
The number of COVID -19
patients seen in the ER in any
given hour is a random variable
represented by X. The probability
distribution for X is presented
below.
The lesson focused on calculating the mean
and variance of a discrete random variable.
After going through this lesson, the
students are expected to:
1. apply the important concepts of mean
and variance of a discrete random
variable; and
2. calculate the mean and variance of a
discrete random variable.

1 3/8
2 3/8
3 1/8
PERFORMANCE TASK
Make a study about how many sheets of paper you
consumed weekly in answering your activity.
Record the quantity (total number of sheets) per
subject, then construct a probability distribution.
Compute the mean, variance, and the standard
deviation of the probability distribution you made.
Interpret the result, then find out how many weeks
you will consume in 50 sheets of pad paper.
