DERIVING INDUCTIVELY THE

RELATIONS AMONG
CHORDS,ARCS, CENTRAL AND
INSCRIBED ANGLES
PREPARED BY GROUP 1
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The learner derives

inductively the relations
among chords, arcs, central
angles, and inscribed
angles.
BASIC PARTS OF
A CIRCLE
ARC

Part of a circle named by its endpoints

RADIUS
Line segment whose endpoints are the center
of a circle and any point on the circle
DIAMETER
Line segment that passes through the center of a
circle, and whose endpoints lie on the circle
CHORD

A straight line segment whose endpoints

both lie on the circle
ARCS
An arc is a part of the circle that is unbroken
and consists of two endpoints.

Semicircle - arc that measures exactly 180 °

Minor Arc - an arc that is smaller than a
semicircle or measures less than 180 °
Major Arc - an arc whose measure is greater
than 180 ° or bigger than a semicircle
CENTRAL ANGLE

A central angle is an angle whose vertex

is the CENTER of the circle.
The measure of a central angle is
equal to the measure of the
intercepted arc
SUM OF CENTRAL
ANGLES

The sum of the measures of

the central angles of a circle
with no interior points in
common is 360 °
INSCRIBED ANGLE

An inscribed angle is an
angle whose vertex is on a
circle and whose sides
contain chords.
INSCRIBED ANGLE

The measure of an
inscribed angle is equal to
1/2 the measure of the
intercepted arc.
INSCRIBED ANGLE

If two inscribed angles of a

circle intercept the same
arc, then the angles are
congruent
