Determining the

CENTER a n d RADIUS
of a circle
objectives:
1. Students will be able to determine the center
and radius.
2. Students will be able to visualize circles
geometrically.
3. Students will be able to use this lesson for real-
life usage.
recap:
Graphing circles requires
two things:

• center
• radius
• center
Also called the origin, or the focus of
the circle. It is the midpoint where all
radii intersect. It is also the basis for
naming a circle.

• radius
It is a line segment extending from the
center of a circle / sphere to the
circumference or bounding surface.
standard form of a circle:

(x - h)² + ( y + k)² = r²
general form of a circle:

x² + y² + Dx + Ey + F = 0
Examples:

x² + y² = 64 (x - 3)² + (y - 4)² = 25
Now let's try and graph
the circle!
Examples:

x² + y² + 2x - 6y - 15 = 0 x² + y² - 10x + 4y - 7 = 0
Transform general to standard form
Step 1:

Bring the x variables together and put the

constant term on the right side of the
equation.
Transform general to standard form
Step 2:

Make the expressions a perfect square

trinomial.
Transform general to standard form
Step 3:

Lastly, we're going to write it as a square of

a binomial .
A particular cell phone tower is designed to service
a 12-mile radius. The tower is located at (-3, 5) on a
coordinate plane whose units represent miles.
What is the standard equation of the outer
boundary of the region serviced by the tower? Is a
cell phone user at (8, 0) within the service range?
Now let's try and graph
the circle!
Try this yourself!
