Completing the
Square

The aim of completing the square is to write a quadratic

function as a perfect square. Here are some examples of
perfect squares!

Example 1

Step 1: Move the constant term (i.e. the number) to right

side of the equation.
x² + 8x = 20
Step 2: Find the term that completes the square on the left
side of the equation. Add that term to both sides.

x² + 8x + ____ = 20 + ____
½ * 8 = 4 then square it, 4² = 16

x² + 8x + 16 = 20 + 16
Step 3: Factor the perfect square trinomial on the left side
of the equation. Simplify the right side of the
equation.

x² + 8x + 16 = 20 + 16
(x + 4)(x + 4) = 36
(x + 4)² = 36
Example 1

Identify the center and radius of the circle with the given equation
x² + y² -6x = 7. Sketch its graph, and indecate the center.

Solution:

Step 1:

Step 2:

½ * -6 = -3 then square it, (-3)² = 9

x² - 6x + 9 + y² = 7 + 9
Step 3: x² - 6x + 9 + y² = 7 + 9

Sketch its graph

Example 3

Identify the center and radius of the circle with the given
equation x²+y²-14x+2y=-14. sketch its graph, amd indicate the
enter.
Solution:

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3: x² - 14x + 49 + y² + 2y + 1 = -14 + 49 + 1

Identify the center and radius of the circle with the given equation. Sketch its
graph, and indicate the center.

1. x² + y² + 4x - 6y - 12 = 0
2. x² + y² - 5x + 4y = 46

Solving Real-Life Problems Using
Graphs of Circle
The epicenter of an earthquake is
the point on Earth’s surface directly
above the earthquake’s origin. A
seismograph can be used to
determine the distance to the
epicenter of an earthquake.
Seismographs are needed in three
different places to locate an
earthquake’s epicenter.
Use the seismograph readings from locations
A, B, and C to find the epicenter of an
earthquake.

 The epicenter is 7 miles away from A (-2, 2.5).

 The epicenter is 4 miles away from B (4,6).
 The epicenter is 5 miles away from C (3, -2.5).
