We use “A” with singular nouns
that begins with a consonant
sound.

EX: A pencil, a pen, a notebook.

We use “AN” with singular nouns
that begins with vowel sounds.

EX: An orange, an hour, an elephant.


PLURAL NOUNS
“S”
In general, we add “S” to the end of
the noun:
EX: pen = pens, apple= apples
“ES”
We add “ES” to the end of the
noun if it ends –s, –ss, –sh, –ch, –x,
or –z,:
EX: Watch- watches, dish = dishes
“IES”
If the noun ends in a consonant +
“Y”, we replace the “Y” and add
“IES”:
EX: Butterfly= butterflies city= cities
“ES”
If the noun ends in “O” we usually add
“ES”;

EX: Tomato- tomatoes potato= potatoes


“VES”
If the noun ends in “F” or “FE”, we
remove the “F” or “FE” and add
“VES”
EX: knifes- knives wolf= wolves
“Same”
There are some nouns in English
that are the same in the singular
and the plural.

Ex: Fish, sheep, deer, moose, aircraft.


“Irregular”

There are some nouns that don’t


follow the general rules, they are
called irregular nouns.
Woman- Women
Man - Men
Child- Children
Tooth- Teeth
Foot- Feet
Mouse- Mice
