 Hour 3: Art & Design
 Hour 4: Presentation & Reflection

Lesson Plan:

Hour 1: Introduction & Historical Context

1. Hook (30 minutes): Begin with a short game of "Symbol Charades." Students act out
historical or cultural symbols while others guess. This introduces the idea of symbols
holding meaning beyond their appearance.

Pwede ra mo ani mag localize or contextualize sa mga common nga symbols nga

2. Passage Introduction & Reading (30 minutes): Introduce the passage and its
mysterious element. Have students read silently, then ask comprehension questions to
ensure understanding.

Hour 2: Symbol Analysis & Research

1. Symbol Breakdown (20 minutes): Guide students in analyzing the symbol from the
passage: its shape, lines, and any recognizable elements. Encourage them to
brainstorm possible meanings based on their observations.
2. Research Mission (30 minutes): Divide students into groups. Each group receives a
different historical symbol from around the local community or from the Philippines.
Allow them to use cellphones so they can research on the chosen symbol. Let them
discuss a little about it.
3. Hour 3: Art & Design

1. Symbol Transformation (20 minutes): Each group creates an artistic representation

of their assigned historical symbol. Students can use various art materials and
techniques (drawing, painting, collage) to express the symbol's meaning visually.
2. Maya's Mystery Continues (20 minutes): Returning to the passage, students create
their own symbol inspired by the one Maya found. They can either design a variation or
an entirely new symbol, keeping in mind its purpose and potential meaning.

Hour 4: Presentation & Reflection

1. Symbol Showcase (20 minutes): Each group presents their research findings on the
historical symbol, followed by a display of their artwork. Encourage them to explain the
symbol's significance and its artistic representation.
2. Connecting the Dots (20 minutes): Facilitate a class discussion where students
compare the historical symbols with Maya's mysterious symbol. Discuss possible
connections, inspirations, or interpretations.
3. Reflection & Wrap-up (10 minutes): Have students write a short reflection on what
they learned about symbols and their power to convey meaning across cultures. They
can also discuss the creative process of designing their own symbol and its potential
message.

Extension Activities:

 They can create a fictional story or myth explaining the origin and meaning of Maya's
symbol.

The Mysterious Package

Passage:

Rain lashed against the windowpanes of Maya's attic room. She shuffled through
a box of dusty trinkets from her grandmother's estate. A small, ornately carved wooden
box caught her eye. It felt surprisingly heavy for its size. Intrigued, Maya pried it open,
revealing a rolled-up piece of parchment tied with an emerald ribbon. Unfurling it, she
discovered a strange symbol etched onto the yellowed paper, unlike anything she'd ever
seen.
