Putting Sounds Together

1. Say the letter sound as you trace it.

2. Put the sounds together and read

the word. One effective way is to say
the word family first, and then add the
beginning consonant sound to decode
the whole word.

First, /a/ + /t/ = /at/

Then, /b/ + /at/ = bat

5A 171 - 200
Step-by-Step to Stories

1. Point to each word as your read.

2. Your child should be able to

recognize most of the words from the
stories because they are review words.
Encourage your child to sound out the
words individually if they need to. Help
students with names or any word they
do not recognize immediately.
