TOPIC : NUMBER SYSTEM

1. Find the remainder from dividing the number 11! + 22! + ....... + 1313! by 13.
(A) 1 (B*) 2 (C) 3 (D) 4
Sol. Note that for all values starting from onwards, the exponent is divisible by thus it is
just as ,except .
This gives us

2. What is the smallest possible number that leaves a remainder of 1, 2, and 3 when divided by 7, 9, and 11,
respectively?
(A*) 344 (B) 444 (C) 144 (D) None of these
Sol.

Note that the above are equivalent to:

Assuming is positive, the smallest solution occurs when

, or .

3. Which of the following is not a factor of (312 – 212)?

(A) 13 (B) 19 (C) 35 (D*) 63
Sol. Clearly is not divisible by so the answer is .

4. Find the largest prime factor of 315 + 1.

(A) 171 (B) 71 (C) 270 (D*) 271
Sol. Observe that

Thus is a factor of
Now we see that

so now we need to find factors of that. Quick examination shows that 31 is a factor, and the other factor is
271 which can be confirmed to be prime; and as we have found all the factors, is our answer since it
is larges.

5. A number s has n factors. The number 256s has 5n factors. Given is a 2 digit number find

(A) 18 (B*) 81 (C) 181 (D) 8

6. A number N has 2009 positive factors. What is the maximum number of positive factors that N2 could have?
(A) 13698 (B) 31689 (C*) 13689 (D) None of these
Sol. We see that has the maximum number of factors when has the maximum number of prime factors,
since then there are more numbers getting multiplied together (of course, this proof is entirely informal).
Since , We have for some primes .

Thus, , and the number of factors is .

7. If a book has 252 pages, how many digits have been used to number the pages?
(A*) 648 (B) 684 (C) 468 (D) 459
Sol.
From page number 1 to age number 9, we will use 1 digit per page ⇒ digits used = 9.
From page number 10 to age number 99, we will use 2 digits per page ⇒ digits used = 2 × 90 = 180.
From page number 100 to age number 252, we will use 3 digits per page ⇒ digits used = 3 × 153 = 459.
Therefore, total number of digits used = 9 + 180 + 459 = 648

8. What is the smallest natural number which is cube of a natural number and fourth power of a different natural
number?
(A) 4996 (B*) 4096 (C) 4196 (D) 4069
Sol. Let N = x3 and N = y4. Therefore, N will contain 12 power (LCM of 3 and 4) of a natural number.
th

Therefore, N = a12 = (a4)3 = (a3)4. The smallest such number is 212 = 4096.

9. 1 and 8 are the first two natural numbers for which 1 + 2 + 3 + ...... + n is a perfect square. Which number is
the 4th such number?
(A*) 288 (B) 188 (C) 88 (D) 388
Sol. 1 + 2 + 3 + … + n = n(n1)2
+ = M2 (say)  n(n + 1) = 2 M2
Now n and n + 1 will have no factor in common. Since RHS is twice the square of a natural number, one of
n and n + 1 will be twice of a perfect square and the other will be a perfect square. As twice of a perfect
square will be even, the other square will be odd. We start investigating the odd squares and their
neighbours. The fourth such numbers we get is 288.

10. The number 12345678901234567890123…890 is four thousand digits long. First, you remove all of the
digits in odd numbered places starting at the leftmost place. Next, you remove the digits in the odd numbered
places in the remaining 2000 digits. You perform the same operation until no digits remain. What digit is the
last to be removed?

(A) 4 (B*) 8 (C) 18 (D) 12

Sol. After the first removal, the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th,… will be left. After the second removal,
4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 20th, 24th, digits will be left. After the third removal, 8th, 16th, 24th, 32nd, digits will be
left… In short, after the nth removal, the first digit would be (2n)th digit in the original number.
To reduce 4000 digits to a single digit, we need to perform the halving operation 11 times. Therefore, the
digit left would be (211)th digit or 2048th digit which is 8.
