It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study and scientific investigation of Rock Mechanics,
including related fields such as geology, geophysics, soil mechanics, mining engineering, petroleum
engineering, and civil engineering.
BS 5930 gives you recommendations for the investigation of sites to assess their suitability for
construction. BS 5930 provides guidelines for conducting ground investigation of construction sites. It
specifies tests and equipment to ensure that the ground is suitable for the planned building design. the
code of practice for site investigations", is a UK code of practice which came into effect on 31 July
2015 British Standards Institution.
• The RMR or the Geomechanics Classification System, proposed by Bieniawski (1973), was
initially developed for tunnels. In recent years, it has been applied to the preliminary design of
rock slopes and foundations as well as to the estimation of the in-situ deformation modulus and
strength of rock masses. Bieniawski's rock mass rating (RMR; Chapter 6) may also be used to
obtain net allowable bearing pressure
• The tensile strength of rock is defined as the pulling force, required to rupture a rock sample,
divided by the sample's cross-sectional area. The tensile strength of rock is very small and is of
the order of 0.1 times the compressive strength. Rock strength is specified in terms of tensile
strength, compressive strength, shear strength, and impact strength. In the context of fracture
gradient, only the tensile strength of rock is of importance.
• elasticity, ability of a deformed material body to return to its original shape and size when the
forces causing the deformation are removed. A body with this ability is said to behave (or
respond) elastically. Elasticity is defined as a physical property of materials which return to their
original shape after the stress that had caused the deformation is no longer applied. Elastic
properties are described by elastic moduli (Young's modulus, shear modulus, etc.) and elastic
wave velocities (compressional and shear). For isotropic rocks, two parameters describe elastic
behaviour; in case of anisotropy, the number of parameters for rock description increases.
• Poisson's ratio is defined as the ratio of the change in the width per unit width of a material, to
the change in its length per unit length, as a result of strain.
This means the ratio of the stress to the corresponding strain is a constant within the elastic limit. This
constant is known as elastic constant.
