REKINDLING SUSTAINABLE RESEARCH CULTURE IN THE ACADEME: PUBLISH OR

PERISH

Publish or Perish Webinar yesterday, whether I like it or not gives half of excitement and half
scary..(It’s with all honesty). I experienced making group research way back high school and it
gave me sort of “phobia” when we were already in front of the research defense panel. Well I
know already the reason why we were filled with so much trembling that day. It was because we
were not that ready and did not really mastered our research topic. What surprised me more
was when I was recalling what our group research topic was back in college? I remembered
more my high school experience and not even recalled what our research title in college was,
maybe because I wasn’t participative that time. It didn’t give me any memory of our college
research journey. I’m sorry Doc. I made this reaction paper a confession site. I am just saying
how my past research experience didn’t give me a good rapport in higher level of research
writing.

Publish or Perish Webinar is a good start in doing research though its emphasis is in in the later
part of doing it. The speaker highlighted the advantage of finishing it and most importantly,
publishing it.

What I remember the most from the speaker was the tag “wearing the hat of a researcher”. This
means big to me. This means work. This means effort. This may mean success but may mean
failure too. So this means patience on my end. But as I listen to the speaker, it gave me a glitz
of hope that there are lots of big opportunities out there after finishing and publishing the
research work.
It is important to consider the institution you will go to. Is your institution a research institution
where you will be guided, inspired and cheer you up until you publish your manuscript.

The speaker stressed out that the theses or dissertations produced in the graduate studies are
what we called the unpublished manuscripts. These unpublished manuscripts can be cited in
the paper but with limitation. Those that are published are the ones that should be used as
citation to our manuscript. This is one of the biggest advantage of a published paper because
this talks about the return of investment (ROI). Whenever you published a manuscript
