APPROACH
Reporter: Fetalver, Keian Hannah G.
What is Language Centered
Approach?
Language- centered approach is the simplest
and more familiar kind to English teachers. It is
an approach that focuses on the linguistic
performance of the learner in the target
situation (Hutchinson and Waters, 1987: 65). This
approach aims to draw direct connection
between target situation and the content of
ESP course.

of the states of matter
1. Identify learner’s target situation: Clearly define the real-world
situations in which learners will use English. These situations could
include job-related tasks, academic assignments, or industry-specific
interactions.
2. Select theoretical views of language: It is crucial in the language-
centered approach within English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for
learners because it shapes the entire framework of language
instruction.
3. Identify linguistic features of target situation: It holds immense
importance because it ensures that language instruction is finely
tuned to the specific needs and demands of learners within their
specialized contexts.
4. Create syllabus: Create a curriculum that integrates language
instruction with the specialized content relevant to the learners'
fields.
5. Design materials to exemplify syllabus items: Choose or
develop materials and resources that align with the curriculum
and the linguistic needs of the learners. These materials should
include industry-specific texts, reports, or academic literature.

6. Establish evaluation procedures to test acquisition of syllabus

items: Assess the effectiveness of the language-centered ESP
program and make adjustments to the curriculum, materials, or
teaching methods as necessary to enhance learners' language
proficiency and contextual competence.
