TECHNICAL GUIDELINES FOR THESIS/DISSERTATION


(PRE-ORAL AND FINAL)
A. General Guidelines

1. Observe formal grammar rules. Do not use casual language such as


contractions (e.g., don’t).
2. Use Arial font size 12
3. Margins
i. Left – 1.5 inches iii. Right – 1 inch
ii. Top – 2.0 inches iv. Bottom – 1 inch
*It can be adjusted/increased so that text will not touch
the page boarders.

C. Pagination:
1. For the preliminary pages, page numbers are written in lowercase
Roman numerals on the upper right-hand corner of the paper.
2. In general, page numbers are written in Arabic numerals and located on
the upper right-hand corner of the paper.
3. For the first page of every chapter, the page number should be hidden.
4. Pagination of the body of the paper is continuous from the first page of
Chapter 1 until the last page of the Curriculum Vitae at the end of the
thesis/dissertation.
D. Text Lay-out:
1. Set the Lay-out spacing (before and after) to zero (0) in the ribbon.
2. Text alignment: Justified
3. Spacing: Double-spaced

This chapter represents a review of the literature and studies on Hazard

Mitigation and Disaster Risk Management. These readings served to

strengthen the Theoretical frame of reference on which this study was

premised.

E. Chapter Numbers and Chapter Titles:


1. Chapter Title must be written in uppercase letters, in bold font, and
centered.

2. Chapter numbers are written in Arabic numerals.

3. There should be double space between chapter number and chapter


title.

F. Subheadings and paragraph of the body of the Thesis:

1. Spaces:
i. Before subheading: 3 spaces
ii. After subheading: double space
iii. Between two paragraphs: double space

2. Indention:
Paragraphs are indented five spaces. It is important to be
consistent with the indention throughout the document.

3. There should be no enumeration, bullets on the body of the Thesis.

4. All subheadings should be bolded.

G. Tables:

1. Table number and title should be written on top of each table and
first letter of each word should capitalized.
2. Table number and title should be written within the width of the table
or should not exceed the table width.
3. Table number and title should be written in single space and another
single space after the title before the table.
4. Second line of the title, if any, should be aligned on the first word of
the first line.
5. Use continuous numbering

6. Use open table (no gridlines)


7. Content of the table should be written in single space.
8. Font size can be decreased to 8 if necessary.
9. Table should not touch the border of the thesis paper
10. Table titles, table numbers, or any of its contents should not be
bolded.

H. Figures and Illustrations:


1. Figures and Illustration numbers and titles should be written at the
bottom of the figures and illustration and should be centered.
2. There should be separate numbering for figures and illustrations.
3. Numbering should be continuous.
4. Figure and illustration numbers and titles should not be bolded.
I. Presentation and Analysis of Data in Chapter 4

2. For better understanding of your Chapter 4, Statement of the


problem should be transformed to declarative sentences.
3. Use the SOP in declarative sentences as your guide and be sure to
answer all the problems. This will serve as your
subheading/subtopics in Chapter 4.
4. There should a short introductory paragraph or description after
each subheadings/subtopic.
5. Short introduction or description about the table.
6. Present the table.
7. Analyze and interpret the data. Use related studies as cross
reference to strengthen your findings.
J. Bibliography:
1. This part contains all sources cited in the study.
2. Only works that appear in the text are included, which means that
the in-text citation should match the references.
3. There are no headings. All sources are arranged in alphabetical
order.
4. American Psychological Association (APA) format is used in the
documentation of sources.
5. Use single space for every source. Second line and succeeding
lines should be indented. And double space after each title or
source.
