Conservation Educator – Dao Tien Primate Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, Vietnam

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a conservation educator to expand their skills and gain experience
working as an integral part of the Endangered Asian Species Trust (UK Charity 1115350, www.go-east.org) at
their rescue and rehabilitation centre, Dao Tien, in Southern Vietnam.

The Role

As conservation educator you will be primarily focussed on delivering tours of the facility to English speaking
tourists and engaging them with the work undertaken to combat the illegal wildlife trade in endangered
primates in Vietnam. The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills
to deliver our messaging to visitors of the centre. The centre provides a transition stage for animals that are
being rehabilitated for release and therefore viewing of the majority of them is from a distance to eliminate
close contact with humans. This requires a creative approach to a guided tour drawing on a number of
resources to fully engage the visitor and hopefully effect behaviour change and encourage advocacy. There
will also be some outreach education delivery to local communities in order to extend our impact.

A number of the animals living at the centre are in large, semi-free enclosures, preparing the animals for
release and viewing from the watch towers for visitors is very rewarding.

The role will also include a number of tasks assisting the team at Dao Tien with the daily running of the
primate rehabilitation process. We have a strong local team and a candidate with good communication skills
will help develop the relationship with the team to enable an excellent team dynamic.

Essential
 Fluency in English - both written and spoken
 Previous working experience in ex-situ institutions
 Previous experience of communicating to a wide variety of audiences
 Must be comfortable living and working in a rural setting
 Able to commit to at least 6 months within this role, upon completion of probationary period
 Self–driven, able to work in challenging conditions and be culturally sensitive
 Computer literacy in Microsoft packages

Desirable
 Previous experience of working in a Wildlife Hospital and/or rehabilitation centre
 Experience with and knowledge of South-east Asian Wildlife
 Some Vietnamese language skills
 An understanding of fundraising within the non-profit wildlife sector
 Animal record keeping systems would be an advantage (ZIMS/TRACKS).

The island of Dao Tien is a 5 minute boat ride from the Cat Tien National Park and facilities for Wi-Fi and other
amenities can be used here daily. The island accommodation is well equipped and includes air-conditioning
and western style bathroom. There are two cooked local meals provided every day for staff at the centre
also.

The National park is a haven for many species and noted for its bird life which attracts international visitors
in large numbers. Other species of note in the park include Black-shanked douc, elephant, Guar and pangolin,
as well as the pygmy slow loris and Golden-cheeked gibbon, the major focus of the rehabilitation and release
work of the project.

Cat Tien National Park is based five hours away from Ho Chi Minh City which is accessible on days off by local
bus transfers. There is also a small village for other shopping nearby, as well as the facilities at the hotels
restaurants and shops at the entrance of the National park. So whilst you are in a gloriously isolated spot
within the forest you are not far from civilisation.

This is a temporary role for 6 months. A subsistence stipend will be paid during the time in Vietnam and
return flight costs will be paid ½ upfront and ½ on the completion of contract. Days off will be dependent on
the weekly schedule.
