1- "I am Girija, a member of Self Help Group in Kansheepuram, India. I would like to
share the changes that I have experienced in my life after having joined the SHG.
This organization is dedicated to the development of disadvantaged families to
address the challenges of poverty and build self-reliance through sustained income
generating programmes.
2- I used to be a very shy person who never talked to strangers. However, I started
to think of the days when my kids would grow and ask for more to cover the
expenses of their education. Reclusive as I used to be, I could offer nothing to
secure their future, not even advice, support, an example to follow or a model to
copy from. I had to bring a sense to my life.
3- Ever since I joined the SHG, I have realised that I have sixteen sisters. Thanks to
the regular meetings, I have learnt to share and discuss my problems, and even
get advice from the older ones. I have also become confident in interacting with
outsiders. As I regularly have to go to the bank and take care of financial
transactions.
4- The gender sensitization given by the SHG has given me faith and confidence in my
own abilities; I have even become aware of my rights as an Indian citizen. I have
realised that I too can become a successful person if I improve my existing skills,
and develop new ones, then pass them to my children. The training was also a great
eye-opener; women have been-and still are- discriminated against in society.
Instead of complaining over it, we learnt to tackle it as a "group" and try to make a
difference. The sky was the limit for us."
